I'd be interested to hear of direct experiences with the Taurus 1911.

FYI not new to 1911s and clones. I own Kimber, Para, Star, Colt and fully custom Caspian slide/frame builds in .22, 9, 10, and 45.

I'm trying to help a new-to-shooting friend looking for an **inexpensive** but reliable 1911 in 9 or 45 with a rail. Taurus seems to fit the bill.

Direct experience (shot one, buddy owns one etc.,) preferred over pure hearsay but I'll take what I can get.

Thanks in advance.

I have sold several through the shop and fired a couple. Lovely fit and finish and they shoot great.

Dont have any long term track record though.

My father in law has one and we have had it out shooting quite a number of times. The gun is a great shooter, as Snowy said, it is finished well. The trigger is pretty good, smooth and easy. I have a Springer Loaded and like the Taurus as well as the Springer. It is one of the guns my FIL will not get rid of. He has had an excellent track record with Taurus and continues to.

Here is a great review on the entire Gun! I have seen opinions on both sides awesome to piece of junk! I just bought another Taurus PT92 AFS in 9mm, and like you im intersted in a 1911 9mm which will probably be a Taurus as well. (The 92 I just got is my first ever pistol with a rail...its growing on me)

I have had no problems with them or Taurus as a company in 20 years, and I have owned some of the cheapest Taurus firearms ever built...( But thats what they were back then) They all worked well and I never used there warranty.

But here is the link to video! It is lengthy but that is what you are looking for, or it seems so to me.

I watched it in entirity and thouroughly enjoyed it!

Hope it helped

Had this one for a couple of years now, shot it plenty and not one problem, 100% reliable. Not one single jam, misfire at all, with 10 different magazines from 4 different makers.

HP's, FMJ's eats them all like candy.

I had one for just over a year and put around 700 rounds through it. It was 100% reliable but the accuracy was only ok, with 4-6" groups the norm at 20 yards while my Colt Series 70 holds 2" groups using the same ammo at the same distance. Interestingly enough the Taurus had significantly less recoil than the Colt.

I liked the gun but ended up trading it for a slug gun.

I traded the black one for the stainless because the finish was pretty thin on the first one. I've got about 4000 rounds through my stainless and it's great. It takes a lot of punishment and has yet to give me any problems. For an inexpensive stainless 1911, you can't beat it.

I've got one, and two of my brothers have them - all have been 100% from day one. Eats whatever I feed it. Not top shelf, but the price difference leaves a lot of coin to invest in ammo. For comparison, among the three of us we also have Colt, S&W, Springfield, and Kimber 1911s - the Taurus doesn't fall too much short in terms of function. We'll see long term, but no issues through a combined thousands of rounds.

I've got the new 9mm stainless version. 550 problem free rounds. Eats everything from HP's to handloads. It's no bullseye gun, but it's accurate enough for what I want it for.

 I bought the very first blue to arrive in Lubbock Texas, it's been fed a strick diet of my home-cast bullets, 100% surefire & accutate. I bought a stainless when they came on the market,, it's been perfect too!

I liked mine so well i finally came to the conclusion id never sell it, Thats when i lost my mind and rebuilt it to my specs. Its just as reliable as the day i got it.
Mine has had two issues in 2k rounds, A bad magazine that a Wilson 47D fixed and a peened extractor another Wilson made HD Extractor fixed.
ANY gun can have those issues.

I would hope a Taurus would be less than 1K. :what:

Honestly this is the first time I have ever heard anyone say that the Taurus 1911 was nicely fit and finished. The are OK out of the box but the blued models wear very quickly. They will show wear from a holster quickly and I personally have never seen one which had been shot that did not exhibit wear on the thumb safety.

I personally would take a RIA over a Taurus. YMMV. Not the Taurus is not a decent gun it is still a entry level 1911 and the RIA is cheaper and truer to the ordinal.

My PT1911 is nicely fit and finished, But thats because i did it myself.
But your very right on many aspects.
The bluing is thin and will show alot of holster wear fast.
ALL parts are undersized so they just drop in and none are hand fit.
The thumb safety did show wear on mine when i replaced it also, I almost thought it was hand fit due to the wear but then i came to my senses.
Thats all the bad stuff, Which isn't really bad when compared to other guns in the same price category.

BUT, The gun overall is smooth and somewhat polished in its operation compared to other low priced 1911's, Even better than RIA depending on the model. My RIA CS Officer had parkerization on every part in the action even on the mating surfaces of the sear and hammer.

The PT is very accurate out of the box and has a very decent trigger. Its pretty well built to series 80 specs and mine had show little wear after 2k rounds.
Get a PT1911 in Stainless steel and imo a great deal.

I owned one for a while. One of the originals, right after they came out. Fit and finish wasn't great, but better than I expected for what I paid and for it being a Taurus. I was surprised by it's reliability with all ammo types, never had a problem with several thousand rounds, but one of the mags that came with it would not seat when loaded with 8 rounds. All other magazines worked fine. Styling really wasn't to my liking though, sold it.

Got one and have put 500 rounds through it since about Thanksgiving. It shoots nice groups at 7-10 yards. It shoots everything I have fed it. It seems very reliable. I love the extras that came standard. The blued finish does mark very easily. But then I don't care if it looks worn because I wear it every day.

I generally here good things about the Taurus but I often wonder how long they really are going to last. With their undersized parts and built in play I question their longveity.

Most of reports of their reliablity are on guns that have less than 1000 rounds through them. I would be interested to see what they are like at 10K or 15K.

Mine has been good through about 4000 rounds. It has loosened up some since I first got it, but it's still a great shooter. And I think I paid $550 for this stainless 1911 several years ago. When you move over to the stainless, it's easily the better option compared to a RIA. I don't know many other options for a new stainless 1911 for close to that price. I don't have any doubts that mine will make it to 10k.

I wasn't impressed with the MIM parts, but I figured that once they wore out, I would replace them one at a time with better quality ones. 4000 rounds and I've yet to have to replace a single part.

I didn't like the lock on the hammer either when I first got the gun. But I shoot the heck out of the gun and now I don't even notice it's there. Doesn't affect the shootability for me.
