Just got a custom 308. It has a 26.5x1.25 UMSS fluted barrel with 1 in 10 twist. Got gun built just for a 800yd and out gun. Dilema now is bullet choice. This is only a paper puncher and have no idea where to really start as far as loads. I have some 180gr SMK but cant find load data, does anyone use these and if so could you help me out. Other bullets I am going to pick up is 190 SMK and maybe some 208 AMax. Any help would be appreciated.

Remmy700,

Good bullet choices for LR work with the .308: Lapua 155gr Scenar, Sierra 175gr MatchKing, and Sierra 190gr MatchKing. There isn't enough case capacity in the .308 to launch the 208gr Amax at a reasonable velocity. If you are going to use the 190SMK, get yourself some VihtaVouri N550 powder. With that powder, I am able to get 2700fps out of my 26" .308 barrel.

These guys have given you good advise. You may want to try out the 178 gr A-Max. I've had great results with it in a 1:10 .308win. I've used IMR 4895, H Varget and R 15 with this rd. The Varget seems to work best in my rifle. Consistancy is the key in long range.

308 Bullets

Thanks to all for your help. Well I have ordered some 190 SMKs and 175 SMKs I have all new Lapua brass. Now I am down to powder selection. I am going to do my best to make the 190 my bullet of choice as I have a 300 win mag 5r that loves the 190s and its always nice when you can have same bullets for two guns to buy bulk. Does anyone have any personal experience with the 190 SMKs and tips and starting load data and powder selection would be great. Any descent loads from someones sweet little secret load book would be great. Thanks again to all.

I've worked up 190 gr SMK's with Varget and had so-so results. I quit using them in .308 win because they would not shoot good in my 20" 1:12 and even though they shot good in my 1:10 rifles, I had to be dead on with ranging. If you're always shooting from a known distance and are good at doing the math, the 190 may work for you. Keep those 190's for the winmag; best darn rd ever for that cal. Good Luck.

308 load

Thanks MtnCreek for your input. I have heard from several people that the 190s shoot great in a 308 with the right powders for distance shooting. Then other people say the same as you. I guess the only thing I can do is try and see what my gun likes. Again thanks for everyones input. If anyone has had luck with 190 SMKs let me know your results and details of load and velocities you acheived. Like I said I want this gun primarily for out to 1000. I have a 20inch I load with varget and 168gr Amax and I shoot it out to around 600 with great results but with that barrel length and load my velocity is definetly the limiting factor at longer ranges and the BC of the 168s dont help either. From a few other people I have talked to with a 308 to 1000 and beyond you have to have a good BC and great velocities. Thanks again to everyone.
