He guys, it's been a while since I've posted anything...but here we go! Over the last few months I have been aquiring parts to do a custom rifle...here is the list: blueprinted Remington 700 action with an '06 bolt face, 6.5mm 1-8" bartlein barrel, xlr industries element chassis, timney calvin elite trigger, nightforce 20moa rail, nightforce 30mm rings, nightforce rail mounted angle indicator, nightforce ring bubble level, vortex viper pst ffp mrad 6-24x50 with a throw lever, tactical bolt knob, and a vortex battery storage compartment... I had the barreled action cerakoted black and the barrel threaded 5/8x24...

That looks awesome, I like your choice in chamberings. How long is the barrel? Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

From the face of the action the barrel is 25.5" long...it's a bartlein #13 contour...yes I've broken it in and began preliminary load workup... I say preliminary, 49.5-50gr of accurate 4350 will make one hole slightly bigger than the bullet at 50 yds...I'm also going to try and hit the next lower accuracy node and compare velocity and recoil before I settle on my load... I'm using berger 140gr vld. ..

I went out yesterday and shot a ladder test for my load, found 49.5 to be my charge

Farmerboy;

If you ever intend to hunt with the gun, I'd also suggest trying the Sierra #1730 140 grain Gamekings. They exhibit excellent accuracy and outstanding terminal performance in my 6.5 Swede.

I like the concept. Personably not sure about the stock choice, but if it works it's YOUR gun. Why such high scope rings? Makes good cheek weld tough and distance correction more extreme, close to far.

They aren't too extreme, these high rings will actually make it to where I won't have to do as many click adjustments to the scope to get to any set distance...especially long range... the cheek weld is actually dead on with the adjustable cheek rest... I think it's sexy!

I didn't want to believe this, but then I checked it with my ballistic calculator and found you to be correct  You learn something new every day I suppose...

I thought you maybe had them a little higher so that you would have more clearance between the scope and the bolt handle. I know on my gun, things are tight in that area and it can get a little annoying when you are trying for a quick follow-up.

I found this very thing out after watching 8541 tactical on youtube... it's funny how I came across these rings...I bought a swfa 10x that listed with butler creek flip up caps and just scope rings (no mention of them being nightforce scope rings)... I got the whole setup for $250... I really got a deal...

I grabbed up my rifle just to check the bolt clearance to the scope...found that the higher rings do give me more room to maneuver the bolt...

Nice build! Always thought the 6.5mm-06 was a great idea, though I don't have one myself (6mm-06 AI is on my short list, though).

How do you like the XLR chassis? A friend of mine ordered a few in for a customer, I got to handle them. Nice units, but they sure are proud of them.

I think it was a great buy after the fact, I too thought it would be pricey...but, after getting the rifle together and shooting it, I can see the quality and I have had great customer service with them for accessories. ..where it sits with quality and performance and price, I think it is probably the best chassis on the market ...I don't have any regrets and they inlet for a ton of different rifles...my remington action fits so snug and tight into the inlet that there is no need to bed it, you can feel this when it goes together...

Loaded up about 60 rds last night and went out shooting today, I was shooting at a 10" high x 9" wide steel plate @ 536 yds...I put my kestrel to work inputting my ballistic app. ..I had a wind from right to left from 10 to 15 mph...this thing was getting boring to shoot at this distance...pounding the steel was just too easy...

I've been trying a new powder and worked up a load for it... 140gr berger hybrid, nosler 280 rem reformed brass, winchester wlr primers, 55gr reloader 25... it shoots at center to center of 0.099" at 50yds. This has been by far the most accurate load I've found

Wow!! Good shooting is that 3 shots or 5 shots?

It is 3 shots... just went to the range today with this rifle and load and was pounding the steel out to 750yds...I'm zeroed at 50/200 yds and dialed 4.1 mils to hit 750...it was a silhouette targets 21 tall by 12 wide...

Here is the group at 50yds!

I joined a shooting range yesterday that goes out to 810yds. ..took this rifle and the new load out to 750yds with 4.1 mils... loving this rifle

My previous post was using reloader 25, but I picked up some h1000 and it shot a tiny group as the re 25 did... I actually had 3 loads that did, so I shot them all at 200yds today and ended up with a load that produced a 6 shot group that is right at 1"... will stretch it out soon to see how it compares to the re 25. My load was 54.5gr h1000

Took her to the range again today to try out the h1000 load! It shoots just as well as the re25 did and seems to burn a little cleaner too... using my strelok pro app, the h1000 load shot exactly the same as the re25 load to 600yds... but it a tiny bit faster and didn't drop quite as much as did the re25 load... but it was so close that I could have interchanged data and made hits on steel out to 750yds... I use a g7 b.c. of .317 for the berger hybrid for both loads, and the app shows the h1000 mv to be 3010 fps!!! About 24 fps faster than re25 and get the temperature insensitivity to boot!

Went to the range again today with this rifle and shot to 700 yds... this rifle is so accurate, it began to get boring shooting center mass on the silhouette steel. So I started taking head shots. And all I can say is wow! I missed one time just to the right while taking the head shots... my favorite rifle by far!

Well, I used this beast for deer season this year before flooding closed it down... I scored on a doe, but she's nothing special... but the shot, oh my is all I can say! I had a 5+mph wind from about the 7:30 position that held pretty steady... got my range, and put my rifle down on the harris and held .5 mil left for the wind and pressed the trigger... i held the hash mark right behind the near shoulder... after the recoil, the rifle settled and I saw her drop in the scope... the 140gr berger hybrid hit her directly in the right shoulder and came out 2" in front of the left shoulder in the neck... Oh, did I mention she was 875yds away from me? I love this rifle!

Wow, that's a fair poke, what is the calculated residual velocity at that range? What kind of velocity are you getting out of the Berger's at the muzzle, and did you get expansion?

And where are you deer hunting that you can get shots at that range? Most of the open country like that around here is in shotgun only zone. Not all but most.
