Real nice. Very impressive! I too customized (sporterized?) a M96, but a little different route. Mine started with a good barrel, so I kept it. I cut it to 22" and turned it down to featherweight dimensions. I cut off the old and welded on a new bolt handle. Then I fitted a M70 type swing saftey, added a Timney trigger. Finally, I converted it to cock on open. I replaced the floorplate latch with an extended one so I can open it with my finger, and finally I significantly "restyled" the triggergaurd. I put it in a McMillan stock that is of the pre-64 Win M70 pattern, added a 6x Leupold. I used a Redfield JR base and Redfield rings, and lastly engine turned the bolt. It shoots good enough to be my sheep rifle and has accounted for a Dall, a Stone, and a Rocky Mt. Bighorn, as well as a couple caribou and a Mt. Goat. I did everything myself and don't remember how much is in it, but not much, save for the stock. That little 6.5 M96 turns a lot of heads--and guides really like the non-magnum bang! I use 120 gr Barns XLC's, will go to Triple Shocks when they're gone. I've gotten all three sheep using the same case. My goal is to get a Grand Slam (if I ever draw a Desert Sheep tag) with that one case--then I'm going to get it gold plated (the case, not the M96).
