Well I wanted an IWB sheath akin to the old Cold Steel Laredo and Natchez bowie sheaths with the "southern comfort" style of carrying. I had my local leather worker make this thing up for me and it is darn sweet. I carried it while grocery shopping and it was very comfortable. 20201219_140713.jpg

Now I don't intend on carrying this everyday but I will be carrying it occasionally, I have done reading and tried to teach myself some fencing and old baratero (Spanish knife fighter) moves but I am starting fencing classes in the next year.

Nice!

What style? I fenced saber in college and it gave me some good skills on footwork, but only very little translated to a big bellied blade like that. I even sought out a western blade combatives instructor and it was closer, but not "there". FMA came far closer with the inclusion of limb destruction. I'd advise avoiding Olympic Fencing styles other than saber if you're trying to learn a practical bladed martial art (and I won't advise anyone to take fencing except as a sport any longer with the availability of FMA schools).

I actually do think it's an Olympic school, by FMA you mean the Filipino arts correct? I honestly haven't looked around for that, I was hoping that fencing would translate at least the foot work and most of the style over to a large blade ok I'll check some others things out then

I think this is the same concept, the stud to rest against your belt to keep the sheath in place. I bought this thing off eBay fairly reasonable IIRC, it has “Marbles” stamped on it. My 10” poor man’s Bowie by Old Hickory fits it perfectly.

Yep same concept, I have the 7 inch old hickory works good in a kabar USMC sheath. Do you carry that one alot

I carry it very infrequently. I also have the 7” with the KaBar USMC sheath. It sees a bit more action. Usually, when I’m in the woods something smaller seems more appropriate.

I agree I don't typically carry a Bowie all the time, that may change but for now no. I carry a Cold Steel outdoorsman and/or a Bear Ops Rancor but now I carry the CS Sspada 20201210_105953.jpg

I fenced before I started training in knives. It really doesn't much fit since Olympic fencing is in a lane. If you work at it and learn saber you can learn speed and accuracy, but you'll save a lot of time finding a Filipino Martial Arts school that teaches blade work.

I just found this school reasonably close I'll call Monday.https://dustindenson.mykajabi.com/

Explain that to the Guro so he knows you have that issue. Also explain what you're looking to get out of it (self defense with a large blade). If they want a contract make sure you're committed to showing up. A lot of people make two or three sessions and don't keep coming and working. It will be unfamiliar so don't get frustrated. Sure saved my hide once.

Will do, thanks for the advice!
