Custom Rifle ideas

That's how I shoot my chassis bolt rifles. The only reason I have a mag inserted is to prevent the cartridge from falling through the action.

Me too. I single load all my bolt guns when I'm shooting them off the bench.

Giving this more thought, is it the pressure that mag follower puts on the bolt that adds a variable to the accuracy?

Then a funny thing happened while I was at the FFL....something else followed me home

Range report.

1. I love everything about this rifle
2. See #1

I'm just following the prescribed break in process (first time I've ever bothered with it) using a load that's worked in the past. I started getting an idea this was going to be an accurate rifle as I was zeroing the scope

After the initial shoot/clean/shoot I was shooting 5 shots, then cleaning. The first shot would be high, then the other 4 would settle in

My last 5 shot group looked pretty good

Awesome! Good looking groups for sure. with a rig like that it almost feels like cheating some days. . . almost

I had my Mausingfield 308 out today shooting steel at 600 and 1000yds. the wind was a little tough for me at 1000yds as it was my first time shooting that far, the berm is grassy, heavy mirage and 5 other excuses. long story short at 10" plate at 600 yds I was able to get 90% hits on. out at 1k it took a number of sighters, but once I figured out the wind hold I got 5/5 on the gong. It is pretty big gong, easily around 30" but a fresh coat of paint on it and once I figured out the wind it became almost easy.

now you just need to find more time in to shoot the dang thing.

z7,

I'll be headed back out tomorrow to take a crack at 1,000

Sounds like you did great!

It was a good day for me. any day you get to send about 80rds of 308 down range AND hit your targets at distance is a good day.

put up another range report tomorrow if you don't mind with your load data info you used. I will say the 178g ELD Match works pretty well in my rifle. 9.9MILS at 1k, should be right around 2700fps.

I did, but results were not as good z7.

I don't have any loads worked up yet, so I just picked 175 SMKs 43g of Varget, shot a few over my chronic to get speed for scope adjustment. 2,680 FPS put me at 10.1 MILs and I started banging away at 1,000. My hit percentages was probably ~30%

This was only my 3rd try at this distance so I need some more practice and as stated, I need some load development

I really like the Kahles K624i. I got the option to move the windage knob to the left side. Use that one time and I promise you you'll wonder why every scope isn't that way (if you're right handed) Every aspect of this scope is so far above my experience in quality that it's hard for me to make comparisons

The wind will make you scratch your head. My first 10 shots resulted in 1 hit and about 9 "where did that land"

It didnt help that i got lost when dialing up and put on 12mils for the first 5 shots. . .

I did see the left side windage option on that scope, how does the paralax adjustment work out on the right? I tend to hold wind, for now, so it hasnt been too much of a problem

Nice rifle Nature Boy, and very nice shooting. Seeing what you have here makes me want to put off my planned October retirement so I can get just one more rifle :)

Nature Boy, very nice! I've never handled or looked through a Kahles scope but I like the way that scope is configured with the windage dial on the left. Time for a box test perhaps and a magazine test. ;)

The rifle came with one AI mag and the PMAG I bought doesn't work so if I do any mag tests it will be will an N of 1 ;)

That turret placement does look convenient for right hand prone shooting, no trying to look around to the right side of the scope to check your windage dial. Makes you wonder why almost all other scopes have right side turrets?

Because many shooters make heavier use of the focus adjustment than the windage dial - they hold windage.

Also for scopes with covered turrets, people don't care how easy they are to access in the field. They want to adjust them on the bench and the bulk of shooters are right handed.

If you get a chance, try it Bob. It's very intuitive to have windage on the left.

This has been one of the very best threads I've ever read; every bit of it informative. However, I might just be prejudiced. I've got a custom rifle at Short Action Customs (SAC) right now being re-barreled. The rifle was built by another shop. I hadn't used their services before, but the research came down to two (the other one is in this post as would be expected) and the prompt and courteous response from SAC won the day for me. Making a long story short the past month's conversation with Mark conveyed a good deal of integrity, sincerity, and above all, honesty, to me. So even before reading this post I was anxious to get my rifle back. The proof is in the pudding and you've surely got it in that rifle.

Just for a chuckle: When I was in eighth grade--I think 1957 it was--Nature Boy became my nickname. Bobby Darrin had a song named Nature Boy at the time, and my book report in English class--on mustelidae--prompted the moniker. Enjoy that rifle!
