Custom Rifle ideas

So are these the final specs you went with on your rifle? I'm very jealous, I'd personally prefer a different caliber, but I understand you are set up for and partial to the .308, so your decision makes sense. The Razor 2s and Nightforces I've looked through were very nice, I've never bought a scope of that caliber, but a but when I do it will be either a Razor or Nightforce. Also, most of the guys I shoot with are using Christmas tree style Horus reticles, and they are amazing for quick shooting in high wind conditions.

Edit: I assume you went with a 10 twist so that you can shoot the better heavier bullets, 208gr ELDs and whatnot?

I made a couple of changes to the finial build. Here's what it looks like:

  • M5 Mausingfield RH, SA, .308 – no change

  • Manners MCS-T6A Desert color – no change

  • Timney Calvin Elite trigger– no change

  • Bartlein 26” MTU 5R 1-10 twist, mated to receiver, no barrel nut – changed from heavy palma contour

  • .308 win chamber, SAC tactical match reamer– no change

  • Hellfire brake – also added a thread protector

  • Cerakote – black graphite

Most of the specs on here were per the recommendations of SAC.

SAC talked me out of a savage barrel nut system. They say it's easier for me if they fit future barrels to my action so all I need is an action wrench, barrel vice and the headspace is always a fixed constant. That made sense to me.

I also understand that means there's a little more revenue in it for them that way but my thinking is you go to a custom builder to listen to their advice, not tell them how to do it. Either way it gives me the platform for flexibility to change barrels easily and have a completely different rifle.

(This is the inner conversation I have with myself to somewhat justify the cost, lol)

I've settled on a scope for this build and will be getting a Kahles 624i 6-24x56mm

And with that decision I'm likely done with any firearm related purchases for the foreseeable future. Hahaha!

Well done sir,

That will be one fine rifle when you get it

Sounds like a very nice rifle.

Can't say I would have gone same route, but that's me.

I would have sold off the FN SPR, and acquired an Accuracy International in the desired caliber and not looked back. I have several friends who shoot long range competitively and they all tell me that if they had it to do over again they'd have skipped everything else and gone strait to an AI because that is where they ended up. Having looked at their AI's I have to agree with them. If you can afford one they're the best overall rifle for that purpose.

I debated going the AI route long and hard but in the end the mausingfield action won me over. It's impossible not to be impressed with what Ted has done with his design.

Plus, I don't sell guns ;)

You're going to get a nice stick. One of my two friends that have AI's really likes the Mausingfield action too, but feels the overall feature set and beefiness of the AI action is still superior. He said the ultimate is the AI AXMC since you as the end user can change calibers and barrels yourself. All you need are spare barrels and appropriate bolt heads.

The AXMC is out of your budget though.

I think you did real well. Nice build, something to think through, work with your builder, shoot, de-bug, etc. It's a great pastime :)

Would I have done it the same way - of course not. But so what... This is your thread and I'm 100% behind you. It all makes sense to me. I see why you did what you did.

Yeah, drive the old commuter car a few more years. That'll pay for it. They last plenty well enough now days. With a coupe of dings, it'll never get stolen or hardly looked at and that's good, cause you don't want folks snooping around what's in the trunk :D

I hope you get to shoot it competitively... We want to know? We will get pictures, but the score cards are more important :D

Nauture boy what's the projected turnaround time?

They have everything in stock so hopefully not too long. I guess it depends on how busy they are and who's in line ahead of me.

They were supposed to give me an estimate when the check cleared but I haven't heard yet

If you are set on a controlled feed action look at the Montana Rifle Company's. They are much like M70 controlled feed Winchesters. I had bad times with a M70 Win when they first reintroduced the controlled feed M70 but possibly the new ones are better. As shown the "Mausingfield" appears to have it all. If push feed with a plunger ejector works BAT actions are nice and would probably work well for targets just short of being over the horizon. Instead of being "trued" some of my rifles just have the receiver ring squared off and the bolt lugs lapped in and that works well enough at a much lower cost.

I did look at them. One issue with it and all M70 actions is the lack of after market suppprt. With a few exceptions, most chassis manufacturers design their systems to fit with Rem. 700 actions.

That's one of the "best of both worlds" aspects of the Mausingfield design. It's outer geometry is compatible with those platforms, yet has the CRF mechanisms.

(Again, these are the inner conversations I have with myself to rationalize what I just spent, hahaha)

I can't wait for the pictures and the range report! I dream about this all the time, but I never have pulled the trigger on a high dollar, no comprises build...

I just got notice that it's ready to ship. SAC sent a few pictures. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
