Im thinking about getting a 336 and having the barrel cut off at 16 inches. What does it cost to have that done? Anyone have pictures of one thats cut down?

Just be careful to measure properly, better to aim for 16.25". Measure by sicking a cleaning rod down the barrel to the bolt face on a closed bolt. You can rent a crowning tool and a barrel threader (if needed) from a number of different places, Dinzag.com is one.

If you were going to do something like that to an import gun like a Mosin-Nagant, but the import markings were just an inch or less back from the front sight is that a no go? are those markings required to stay ?

The last time I had a rifle barrel threaded I also had it cut down. I think the total cost for cutting it to 16.25", recrown, and thread was about $85, so hopefully you are looking at less than that.

You have to cut and recrown the barrel, cut the dovetail or drill and tap or silversolder the front sight back in place.
Normally the shorter the barrel the taller the front sight so you will have to replace that part assembly.

The magazine tube will have to be cut down and have the cap and spring cut and refitted as well as the barrel band will have to be relocated and fitted.
Scratch all this if you happened to come across one of those rare and spiffy half magazine Model 336A rifles.

Total cost is going to be in that $150 to $200 range unless the gunsmith is in a real good mood and doesn't eat much.

Finding a Marauder for sell is like trying to find a pretty 27 year old virgin. They are out there but I have never seen one.

just hunt down a Marlin 336RC Marauder

As fast as they sell (as well as the youth models with the short barrels that can take a full length stock) and for as much as they sell for, you'd think Marlin would bring them back.

OK, totally off topic, but I wish Marlin would bring back the 1894CL in .25-20 caliber.
I should have latched on to one of these when they were available!
You snooze, you lose!
