I'm looking for a good gunsmith to modify a Marlin 336 into a "truck gun"

I was thinking of having the barrel and magazine cut down to 16 1/2 inches, and recrowned.

What do you think? Is it worth doing? are there any gunsmiths currently doing it?

Brockman will shorten and recrown the barrel and magazine tube, and relocate all the screws for $85 plus $30 return shipping. His turnaround time however, is about 4 months. The local smiths I talked to wanted between 275 and 300.

Thanks

Outstanding information! Thank you all very much, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I'll post photos when it's done.

Not if you already own the gun. Besides I'm kind of interested in having this done to an 1894 in .44 Magnum. I'd surmise if they can do it to a 336 they might be able to help me too. Can't buy the youth version of that; they don't make one I'm aware of.

you are looking for a Spikehorn

I second the idea of getting the 336 Spikehorn as a truck gun.

The Spikehorn is a "youth size" version of the 336, has a factory
short barrel and short butt (like the Vietnam era Stevens riotgun).

Price of new Spikehorn appriximately equals cost of used 336C plus
custom gunsmithing. Of course if you already have the gun,
you are only out the gunsmithing charges. Sometimes a custom made
gun is more fun even if a factory equivalent is available.
