I'd really like to cut the barrel on my Stoeger Uplander down to 18", but don't know exactly how to do it. Anybody done it before? Reccomendations? Maybe talk me out of it if it's a stupid idea?

im having a gunsmith cut down my stevens 311 to 20" and
put a bigger beed on it $40. i dont think that i would
cut my barrel right a 18" i would go just over 18"1/4 or 18"1/2
i was going to cut them down my self to butt dint think that
i could make a stright cut or put a beed on it

If you do it yourself, make sure that you don't have any burrs on the muzzle. Even very small, almost invisible ones can cause erratic shot patterns. Take the time to pattern the gun when finished. If it looks erratic, check the muzzle more closely.

If you cut it off you will need to figure out a way to fill the holes left between the barrel ribs that hold it together.

This is double barrel gun, correct?

The barrels SHOULD have some form of regulation - i.e., they are NOT parallel - cutting a straight line may not give you the desired POI/POA - only the pattern board will tell you that
You will also lose any form of choke unless you have the barrels thread for choke tubes

RC, how do you suggest I do that? and how could I make these barrels pattern well?

Why not just buy a Stoeger Coach Gun instead? Or perhaps you'd like their Double Defense model? http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/stoeger_double_defense.php

Sell the Uplander towards it. While it's hardly the worlds finest double, I'm sure there's someone out there who would rather take that 26 - 28" barreled shotgun hunting while you use a Coach gun for whatever you want a short barreled shotgun for.

A standard Sxs with 28" barrels is shorter that an 870 with standard stock and 20" barrel. 26" barrels on a SxS are a shorter O/A length than an 18" barreled 870.

Barrel regulation, already iffy on a Stoeger, can go south in a major way after cutting.

I suggest getting a coach gun and selling the uplander, as has been suggested.....

I probably should sell the uplander, but I really like the idea of making the gun I want myself. If I did it well, what do you think would happen to the resale value?
