I am looking for a good 45/70 scope for hunting and shooting out to 150 yards. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, keeping in mind I need good eye relief. Thanks!
My 1895 GuideGun wears a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x.
Near perfection for this rifle.
My younger brothers 1895 Rifle wears a Burris 2-7x with BDC reticle. Works for him.
I have a Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm on my SBL, mounted with steel Talley QD rings. the scope is just about perfect in every way. It's light, has plenty of eye relief and has more than enough magnification for sub moa groups at 100 yards or hunting out to 300 yards.
i shoot 50grs h-4895 and a hornady 300-350gr bullets in my very early 1895 marlin(#BOO1920) with a 3x leupold scope and its a sure killer to 125yds in the woods. eastbank.
If I were scoping a 45-70 it would be something in a 1-4X20, or very similar. I used to think the 2-7X scopes were more versatile, but 1X or 1.5X is a lot faster up close. You just have to try it to appreciate the difference. Set at 4X will give you more magnification than you can use.
Those are my favorite versions of the 1895's. You don't see those often, but I've owned 2 just like that as well as one of the Guide guns over the last 40 years. I could never really warm up to the 45-70, even though I tried for 40 years, but if I were buying one I'd look for that version.
