Well I wasn't looking for another gun, but I seem to have bought one
Last week while buying .22WMR ammo I spotted an old shotgun leaning in a corner of the shop, I noticed it was a side lock so had a closer look.
It's an old circa 1965 CZ, looks as if it's had a hard life, but still works ok.
The price was £60 I was told, so I left it where it was (skint)
On Saturday I was back in the shop for something else, shop was busy and to waste time I picked the CZ up again and had a good look at it, wood is solid, not oil soaked, but is a little knocked about and the chequering is just about worn away.
The action or lock up is a little loose, but only noticeable with the fore end removed, it has a removable hinge pin.
Barrels have had the chokes opened up to 1/4 & 1/4, which actually suits me, it's just a shame they have only about 10% of the bluing left.
My turn at the counter, and after buying my bits and pieces, he says, you keep looking at it, make me an offer
Lets just say I made an offer that he accepted, and the 50 cartridges I bought to suit it, doubled the total price :D:D
I christened it 2 hours after buying it, five shots, five dead various, only problem was a failure to eject, a good cleaning has cured that, and a new hinge pin is all it needs to be a 100% reliable shooter.
I was going to refinish it, but have decided to just use it, and apply a little stock oil.
The wear and tear is a mark of the life it has lead over the last 44 years, and I don't suppose I will ever see another like it, after all if it had been a mint condition one I would not have been able to afford it.
Pics here and here last one here.

nice.

That does'nt look nearly as bad as I was expecting from your description. Have fun with it.

Is 1/4 choke equiv to improved cylinder?

cool old sidelock

when i first read it was a sidelock i feared it had false sideplates but then you said it was older and then i checked out the pics and low and behold a true sidelock gun at a great price.

I bet it is fine shooting.

Are the breech faces screwed in?

No, but it has disc set strikers, makes firing pin replacement easy :D

I bet it is fine shooting.

Seems to shoot very well, and is a joy to swing onto a target, particularly as they all seem to die.
And yes it is a true side lock, it also has proper chopper lump barrels, which was a pleasant surprise.

Well a trip to a clay shoot proved that it is a keeper
And on the way home I dropped in on the shop I bought it from, I asked how I should go about tightening the lock up, the reply was "put the kettle on".
30 minutes later the tea was drunk and the lock up was as new :D
I have decided there will be no refinishing, I'm just going to use it, clean it, and repeat.

And neither here nor there really, but perhaps to bring this round full circle, here are some pics of a CZ 12 ga SxS shotgun made some 45 years later.

CZ / Huglu "Grouse", discontinued but very very similar to the "Ringneck"

A friend of mine has one of those... took it from his personal case to stock his new shop. If I had a use for another double besides my 2% finish Verney Carron CAS gun, I would get it.

He says it is cocked by the top lever, like some of the very early hammerless guns. Zat so, Hornet?

No, all the top lever does is open the action and reset the auto safe.
The cocking is done by normal cocking levers through the action, and operated by the fore end iron as you open the barrels, shutting them sets the ejectors.
