Okay, in a completely unprecedented event, I'm actually interested in a .40 caliber pistol.

I almost bought a CZ-40B as my first handgun. Local shop had one for $300.00 and something. Wish I had, but I liked the CZ-97 I ended up with.

Well, after the acquisition of my Colt, my poor 97 kind of fell by the wayside, so I sold it to a friend who's getting a lot more use out of it than I. It was a touch too big for my hands anyway.

I miss having a CZ around, though. FBMG had a CZ-40P for a steal recently. I liked it. I understand they took the remaining CZ-40B slides and mated them to P-01 frames.

I have a coupl'a questions though.

Magazines: They come with 10 round magazines with a big thick baseplate. What magazines work in these? Do CZ-75 .40 mags work? EAA Witness .40 mags? IMI Baby Eagle .40 mags? What I'm asking is if there's a way to get a magazine that holds more than ten rounds. The grip is big enough for 12 rounds or so, so I'd like it to hold 12 rounds, that's all.

Some people have had reliability problems. My CZ-97B took a LOT of breaking in. It wouldn't feed most JHP ammo at all until I sent the barrel back to CZUSA for a throat/polish. Do the .40 CZs share this problem?

You can get 12 round .40 caliber CZ mags that will work in it. The 12 round EAA Witness mags might require some slight modification to work in CZs. You can also get 10 round CZ compact .40 caliber magazines that will fit flush without the protruding mag extension base as on the factory mags.

CZs can have some issues that usually solve themselves during break-in. The feed ramp issue with the 97B is well known, but isn't an issue with other CZ models. FWIW my 40P has been completely reliable for me out of the box.

NOOOOOO!!!! Not the .40!!!

What can you not do with .45 and 9mm (or .44 MAG, in your case) that you need .40 for?
I highly recommend the 9mm CZs, but .40?
If you must, you can't go wrong with CZ, but must you?
Steve

I had a CZ-40P and while it was reliable I wasn't impressed, it was a odd size critter with a compact frame and a full size slide and it had more tooling marks than I have ever seen from a handgun. The painted on finish started coming off around the mag release. But it was reliable.

My CZ-97B took a LOT of breaking in

A gun is not a car they should never have to be broken in, in my opinion a gun should never leave the factory if it is not 100%.

I can appreciate the sentiment, but the facts of the matter are that no brand is 100%. Some are closer than others, but you generally pay the price for that reputation. If CZ wanted to sell their 75Bs for $700 or $800 they could afford to worry more about smooth finish and smooth function out of the box. The very reason I like CZs is because for $400 and sometimes (but not always, or even the majority of the time,) a little attention, I get a pistol that for ergonomics, accuracy, and reliability, I consider at least the equal of pistols costing twice that much.

I have known a handful of folk with the 40P, and their pistols were all 100% from the git-go. I've been eying one for a while, especially since they can be bought for such a ridiculously low price....

For what it's worth, were I not getting hot-n-heavy into M&Ps the 40P would be my next pistol purchase.

there is still some cz40B's out there nib.I bought one last year and it was $325.00 OTD.
I bought a 175 gr swc mould loaded up 100 rd's and box of speer 180 lawman and went to the range.not one bobble:) .great pistol.
