CZ 52 For Self Defense?

Hey guys,

I purchased one of those refurbished CZ 52's with the black oxide finish, which I understand were refurbished back in the 70's so its in basically new condition. I know the 7.62x25 Tokarov round is pretty high velocity, around 1500 to 1600 fps. If I were to use hollow point ammo and replace the pot-metal firing pin with one of the new steel pins, why couldnt I use this as a CCW self defense pistol?

you could but its on a .30 caliber projectile..............and the only hollow points i know that are available are Wolf Gold JHP/JSP and handloading hornadys XTP

I would handload a XTP to a good velocity and practice alot with it.

I just feel a 9mm, .40, or .45 would be a better stopper......but that is just me speculating

Sure, they're are always better "stoppers" no matter what caliber you have. Main thing, though, is to hit the target and then caliber is of secondary import...and if necessary, change your tactics according to what particular caliber you're carrying at the time. With 7.62x25 FMJs, just drill straight up the centerline and head. That'll do.

So the 7.62x25 is fine...you just need to adjust your tactics, mainly, that means being ever more mindful of what is BEHIND your target since the bullet probably WILL exit.

When I carry my Tokarev (also in 7.62x25, if you didn't know), the magazine in the gun is loaded with HP ammo (for soft targets). And the other two magazines I carry: One has HPs and one has FMJs (for hard targets). But I would not feel at a disadvantage if all I had were FMJs...partly because that's all I had on me during Hurricane Ike here and its aftermath and I felt quite comfortable and ready for looters with my Tokarev on my hip. The simple plan was to drill any looters outside or inside of their vehicles...the 7.62x25 can do that. Just do your part.

I have two cz-52's. Can't imagine trying to use one for CCW. They are heavy and do not a have large ammo capacity for their size. Sure you don't mean a cz-82?

No, Im talking about the CZ52, the one with the unique rollers in the slide.

I think Reeds Ammo is the place to go if someone wants to use the 7.62x25 for self defense.

As far as CCW the CZ-52 is thin, reliable, and has enough penetration to reach the vitals.

I think cloudcroft nailed it. I carry my CZ with one mag full of hp's and two with FMJ. 7.62x25 is a hot little(?) round watch what is behind your target... you will likely make two holes with each shot.

well... it might not be "ideal" for ccw, but if there was an ideal consensus, there wouldn't be so many companies out there making compact pistols. That pistol was meant to be used against other people, probably when a rifle failed (or if the said soldier didn't carry a larger firearm) or was out of ammunition. It will shoot, it will do damage, it can kill. It was issued as a side arm wasn't it? It was made to save (and consequently end!) a life. If it's what you have, use it. Are there "better" firearms available? Probably. I'm sure a lot of people will soon chime in about some perks of newer ccw specific pistols.

I would like to get one some day and all most did but the ones I saw at the last gun show had inflated post obama prices. So I didnt bite.
They are thin, a bit smaller than some guns and seem to have plenty of power.

The Wolf 7.62X25 hollowpoints are monsters. They’ve made a mess out of wet newspapers and lumber for me. If you don’t mind carrying a big one like a CZ 52, you’ll be more than ok. Once you’re used to it, it’s a screaming wild gun.

One reason I prefer the Tokarev as my 7.62x25 platform (vs. a CZ-52) for CCing is because it's THIN and maybe less bulky (but don't have a CZ52 to do a side-by-side comparison though). Another reason is it's stronger than the CZ-52 (despite some opinion to the contrary) due to some reduction of the underside of the 52's barrel/chamber thickness to accommodate the rollers. But factory ammo is okay with it.

I recently got some Czech ammo but I'm not too worried about it being "hot" (if that's truly the case although I doubt it)...because Toks can chew anything.

I've fired all sorts of factory and surplus FMJ ammunition through my CZ-52, including 93gr JSP and 85gr XTP/JHP from Reed's. I will say that I'm impressed by the reliability of my CZ-52 and the bark it produces. I have absolutely no doubt to its effectiveness, especially with some type of JHP or JSP.
However, I would never consider it for carry as I find it heavy and bulky, not to mention the horrible sights and ergonomics. Even with Hogue Handalls installed, my CZ-52 in the hand feels like I'm holding a dowsing rod.
I also cannot shoot it nearly as well as I'm sure it's capable of.

However, if it's all you've got, go for it.
