Hi all, my buddy just picked up a CZ 527 with a Mannlicher sp? stock and Leupold VX II glass. I told him to get it because all the ones I've seen anywhere are good to shoot .223 as well as 5.56 X 45. Well, I ordered 1000 rounds of Lake City ammo from Ammoman to split with him before I saw the gun. When I saw the rifle all that is stamped on the barrel is .223 Rem. Can this gun be that different from the others that are good for both? This was the selling point to shoot military ammo. Is it O.K. to shoot 5.56?

This is a question that has been asked repeatedly and unfortunately, there isn't a consistent consensus...

My opinion is that you should not shoot 5.56NATO out of a .223rem barrel.

Stick to the caliber that is stamped on the rifle.

Check the search function for more information/opinions.

Thanks for the reply, I called CZ USA earlier and they said it would be fine in this rifle to shoot both, a CZ 527 FS. On Bud's Guns, when looking at 527s, nearly all say
.223/5.56 NATO in the descriptions. Is there anyone out there who owns a
527 in .223? Is 5.56 stamped on any of the barrels as well as .223? Or just
.223? Just curious. I am aware of the differences between the two and I have searched and read all I could find on this forum. Thanks again.

Mine is stamped .223 Rem on the barrel and the magazine follower. If it chambers and extracts fine, I would have no concern about shooting the 5.56. You don't mention bullet weight of the ammo you ordered, but with the slow twist mine won't shoot well with anything over 55 grain bullets.

98Falstaff;

Mine says .223 also. However, if you want to get the best out of the rifle, you'll need to craft your own ammo anyway. The Lake City brass, with the primer pockets swaged, will provide excellent brass for reloading. If you don't want to reload, I'm sure that there are many people, including me, that will take that nasty filthy used Lake City brass off your hands.

I have a earlier 527 American that has the short 223 throat, and the barrel is stamped 223 REM. You can jam a surplus round in, but pressures spike and it is inaccurate and not advised. It also has the backwards safety and 1::12 twist.

It is extrmely accurate, and beautifully finished.
