For weeks now I have been debating if I should get a Savage or Ruger in 223. Yesterday I started wondering if I had overlooked another the CZ 527 Varmint.

What experience has anyine had with the CZ? I know CZ are well made and the trigger could be just what I want, with the set trigger for target shooting and a heavier trigger for hunting. Is it any better than the Ruger or Savage?

I have got a Savage MKII and its tack driver alright, but you can tell its not that well built. For example when I shoot high velocity 22s (thicker rim) sometimes the bolt has trouble extracting, the extractor claw isn't finished well, its attention to detail, the little things add up! On a side note my Brownings' action hasn't failed to extract yet!

In contradiction however I am still confused whether I should go Savage 25 LV, 1:9 Twist, 24" steel barrel, 4 shot mag, push feed action, laminate stock, a good trigger 1.5lbs and 8.25lbs. $935

Ruger M77 VT, 1:9 Twist, 26" stainless steel barrel, 5 shot mag, control fed, laminate stock, an acceptable trigger (two stage(lots of creep the first stage, personally this would make me more inclined to snatch than squeeze) 2lbs and 9.75lbs. $1075

CZ 527 Varmint, 1:9 Twist, 24" steel barrel, 5 shot mag, laminate or walnut stock, a very good trigger 8OZ set 2lbs normal and 7.8lbs. $1255

So winner on price Savage, weight CZ, trigger CZ, stock CZ, barrel Ruger!
Loser price CZ, weight Ruger, trigger Ruger, stock Savage and Ruger, barrel CZ and Savage.

The two gripes I have about the CZ are one they only offer the 223 in a 1:9 in the varmint and not other 527 why? Secondly why is the mark up on Olin products (CZ527 75% it the same for Browning and Winchester) a lot more than Nioa (Savage LV 35%, ruger VT 10%)?

So breaking it down in to components its the CZ, but a rifle is more than components, I am still very confused, can I justify $200-300 more?

I own/owned two 527 Varmints and they are high quality, accurate guns. I haven't owned the particular Ruger and Savage models you are looking at but if my other guns from these manufacturers are an indication, the craftsmanship isn't what it is in a CZ. That said, they are functional and accurate (especially the Savage). So I think it comes down to whether you primarily want a functional tool or put additional value into aesthetics. The only thing that I don't like on the CZ is the bolt handle interference with a low mounted scope. This can be easily remedied after market, however.

I have never regretted my purchase of my CZ 527 Varmint, it's an excellent rifle. Accuracy is excellent and the fit and finish far surpass that of other rifles in its class. Contributing to its accuracy are its hammer forged factory lapped barrel that does not require any break in and the single set trigger, which is also fully adjustable for creep, over travel, and weight of pull. When I use my trigger in set mode, it's as if it works by mind control. I also like that it has a detachable magazine, although insertion and removal of that magazine could definitely be smoother.
I like my 527 enough over all that my next rifle purchase will be another 527, this time a Carbine in 7.62x39.

As I currently own six CZ firearms, I suppose I could be considered a fan, and the reason for this is that CZ firearms are built the way the traditional U.S. gun manufacturers used to build their guns fifty years ago.....with the attention to detail and the willingness to do things the right way, even if it costs more money.

Cz 527 223 cal

andym79; I shoot a CZ 527 223 VARMINT and it is one of the most accurate 223`s we have. I like everything about this rifle. It has a great Kevlor Stock setup to shoot and mine fits me very well. A great semi heavy barrel and the action on mine is as smooth as glass. My rifle will shoot any thing I have used under an inch at a 100 yds, and the reloads it likes under 1/2 inch at a 100 yds. The SET TRIGGER is just great and a real pleasure to use. I reload for it and I have always used 52 gr BTHP MATCH bullets SPEER, SIERRA, and HORNADY and they work just great. Tried 50 and 55 gr V-MAX and I belive they shoot better, then I tried about a year or so ago the 52 gr A-MAX and this is the best yet, 1/2 inch or under at ` 100 yds If I do my part . I use this rifle to shoot PD`S, GROUND HOGS and a few COYOTES. I have a few friends that shoot this rifle also and their rifles shoot just as good as mine does. I set a 8-32x40 4200 ELITE on top of it and and I really like i. My rifle is a pleasure to shoot and I am very proud of it. I use this rifle a lot and I have never had any problems of any kind with it. CZ rifles are top of the line and evey CZ we have shoots the same way this one does. GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

I've got a Savage 25, and for me it's a great shooter at a great price. Short throat (as .223 bolts go) as I measure it, so a bit tricky to load for.

My vote goes to the CZ. I once traded a 527 American for a 527 Varmint. The guy I traded to decided to sell my old American and i loved it so much i bought it back from him. Both guns routinely shot sub MOA at a hundred yards and both the set and regular triggers were wonderful.

The fit and finish is great on my CZ and i consider it to be a quite beautiful little rifle.

The CZs are in a class above the Rugers and Savages. The fit and finish is better and you can feel and see the craftsmanship that went into it. Its custom shop quality at wholesale prices!

My favorite rifles were my Ruger M77V and my Ruger M77V MKII, both in .22-250. Then I screwed up and bought a CZ 527. The Rugers cry in the back of the safe, cold and lonely....

The CZ is worth every penny and then some.
