I have one with a Nikon 3X9 scope. Half inch groups at 100 yrds. Great trigger. IMHO, the .30-06 is the best "All Around" cartridge even developed. Load it down with 110gr bullets and control critters and pests. Load it up to 220gr bullets and hunt anything in North America. There's a bullet for every use.
The CZ 550 uses the classic Mauser 98 action. Proven. Strong. Reliable. Not as refined as a Model 70 or a 700. Likely not as smooth in operation, either. But if you love the classic 98 (and I do) then you will appreciate this rifle.
The CZs are not as "pretty" as other commercial models from Winchester and Remington. Again, it comes down to favoring the classic 98 system over frills. I have a 550 and several other CZ/BRNO rifles and I love them all.
The 30-'06 caliber is certainly the top choice for a general purpose rifle.

You'd be hard pressed to pick a better "do all" than that! The 550 is good stuff, Maynard, I guar-on-tee.

If I needed another hunting rifle, that would be the one.
If there's a choice between a 'hardwood' stock and a real Walnut stock spend the extra money - you won't regret it down the line. Also, if one of the models comes with a higher polished blueing, get that too. Almost all of the CZ rifles have the potential of being the "pride of ownership" family treasures of the future and you get them at pretty good pricing today.
Although that action may not arrive with the silky feel of the Mauser based rifles of the old days you can do quite a bit to make it get that feel with a fine EZ-Lap and an Arkansas stone. Go over every edge with your fingernail. Hone wherever you feel your nail catch and it'll smooth right out.
Them's nice rifles and they shoot good too.

Have CZ 550 American in a 6.5 X 55 and a 9.3 X 62 I like them both a lot. Also have a CZ 550 FS (Full Stock) in 30-06.
Pros are a Mauser style action with Control round feeding and hand lapped barrels. They shoot well right out of the box. My 9.3 x 62 will shoot slightly under 1 MOA at 200 yards with $20.00 a box 285 grain Prvi ammo. With the hand lapped barrels they don't seem to copper foul the barrels any where what some of my Remington 700 barrels do.
Safety locks the bolt on the CZ 550..... a big plus for me. The reason this is important to me is I've grown tired of my Remington 700 non locking bolt safety. If the bolt handle on a newer 700 catches on a branch or brush just right the non locking bolt will dump the round out of the chamber... usually losing it forever. There is no shortages of branches or brush here in the PNW. I would sure like to take some of the people from Remington hunting in my neck of the woods for a week so they could see how stupid their non locking bolt safety is.
Cons is the action cycling is not as smooth as I would like but they both felt better after I got a hundred + rounds thru them and seem to get better with use. They are a little heavy compared to many hunting rifles today. They weigh about the same as a typical pre 64 Winchester model 70.
All in all CZ 550 American are a decent rifle for the money. Though they have been raising the prices on them each year for the last few years. But I guess inflation is getting to be the normal these days.

OK, runningman, now that IS different. You get the Euro calibers with the American stock, and get the American calibers with the Euro stock. Hey they're guns, so it's all good.
