I will be picking up my new CZ 550 american 30-06 this week. Will a Zeiss Conquest 3x9 40mm fit with Leupold medium rings as opposed to the factory high rings?

Well you MUST use rings *made for* CZ rifles. Whether Leupold makes such a ring I don't know. "Medium" rings will *usually* accomodate a 40mm objective, but you just don't know until you try. Keep your receipt.

Scope mounting is my one complaint with the CZs. Very little in the way of options and none are cheap.

But then, if you are buying Zeiss scopes what do you care about the cost of the mounts?

Leupold does make specific rings for CZ. Have a zeiss already... Just inquiring as to the compatibilty of the mounting system for that scope rifle/combo. I have read that some scopes fit better than others and that the bolt handle hits some scopes.

I have a Leupold 3 x 9 40mm in Warne rings. Works fine for me.

I've heard others say they like Talley rings, but I have no experience with them.

Of course, if I couldn't get a good stock weld, I'm not above duct taping a cheek pad on the gun. Then again, I had the same issue with Rem 700's so I went with the VLS because it had a raised cheek piece.

Like others have stated, you will have to try it to see if it suits you.

Good luck!

CZ 550 American used to come with ring mounts from the factory. Both of mine did. I just use them. They are fairly high and help the bolt handle clear the scope when cycling. The other CZ 550 models such as FS don't come with rings but the 550 American do. They were also stating this on their web sight last time I looked.

I have 4 -12X 40 mm Leupold scopes on both 550 Americans with factory mounts and everything works out good.

I have scoped 4 CZs and I think they all needed high rings. I used medium height on one but it really needs the high. This was with Leupold scopes no bigger than 40mm.

I don't think you can know for sure on any particular scope/ring combination until you actually try it on the rifle. If there's a short cut nobody ever showed it to me.

You can say that again. I bought my 550 back in 1998-99ish at a gun show in New Bern NC. Picked through every box there to find the nicest wood and was surprised as heck when I got it home and there were no factory rings in the box (still can't belive I got so wrapped up in looking at the stocks that I forgot about the CZ specifc rings). Anyway I got on line and started looking for rings... found my options to be very limited.

I have a Leupold 3 x 9 40mm in Warne rings.

I have the same on my 550. A Leupold VXII and the Warne quick detach rings. The stocks check rest is the correct height for them and the bolt handle throw clears the scope fine.

BTW I found my recipt for that CZ550 from 1999. I sure wish I could buy another one for $400.00 out the door.

Your going to love it. Mine is one of my favorite hunting rifles.

Most 40mm scopes will even have adequate clearance with Low rings. Of course this is a generalization and every ring/rifle combo is different. I just got done mounting a 50mm scope in Talley mediums on a heavy barrel no less.

Well

IIRC, The issue with CZs is generally not the front objective clearing the barrel, but rather the Bolt handle clearing the ocular. At least it's that way with the rimfires. That's why you see some absurdly high scope mountings on CZs. Having to lift your face off the stock to see through the scope it is total no go for me.

For instance

That's a actually a center fire M527, yes they can have that problem. You can modify the bolts on them to fix ocular clearence issues.

One of my 204's with nary a problem

Atblis has it right. When using medium rings and a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, the issue isn't the objective bell, it's the bolt clearance. Conquest scopes are usually longer than Leupold's (on average) and have a thicker piece of rubber on the eyepiece.

I am planning on putting a 4200 bushnell 3x9 on my cz 550, I have a set of leopold high rings so I hope I don't have any issues with bolt clearance...
