CZ 75 P-01 questions

I just purchased a NIB P-01 and right out of the box there were smilies on the barrel, is this normal?(factory test shots?) I ordered the laser grip version and it did NOT come with the stock grips, does anyone know the best place to get the stockers? Last question, the recoil rod is black plastic with a significant bend, is this normal and can it be replaced with a stainless guide rod?
Putting these few issues aside, it's an impressive pistol. It has a great DA trigger and the ergonomics and aesthetics are great. I'm looking foreword to a range day with it.
Any input on my questions would be very appreciated.

Stock grips from CZ-USA, but your CT grips should work fine.

Guide rod is normal. A couple of guys on CZF sell the stainless ones.

You are right about the P-01 being impressive, wait until you shoot it!

Thanks for the info CZF. Regarding the wear marks on the barrel bluing, is that normal?

Look under the foam of your box and you'll se the computer generated group of your pistol from when it was test fired at the factory. There will also be a "history" of your pistol that shows the inspector's name, type & amount of ammo fired in it, as well as the date & time it passed final inspection prior to shipping.
I can't speak of the grip situation, but the guide rod is normal. I have 2 green P01s, one with a Factory steel guide rod ( for a CZ 75 compact) I bought from CZUSA and the other retains the original black plastic one... after about 400 rds through each pistol, I can't notice any unreasonable wear on the plastic rod. The engineers of the P01 know their stuff, after all this is the same set-up that seemed to shrug-off the brutal NATO testing protocol that would make an H&K USP pee down it's leg. While I don't find the plastic rod asthetically pleasing, I can find no fault w/ it and just got the steel rod on my first P01 for asthetics, I've found no real difference in either's function.....I hope this helps.

Welcome to the CZ world! I personally bet my life on a PO1 every day. The barrel "wear" is actually the finish on it, normal, and OK.

In the past year or two, CZ started "carburizing" the barrels -- and its a sort of surface hardening treatment. It puts an oxide-like coating on the barrel, and that's what you see wearing off. It can be removed, or it can be left, as is.

The plastic guide rod bends. It functions fine. (Its biggest task is holding the recoil spring in position when assembling and disassembling the gun.) The plastic guide rods are durable -- the softer CZ version doesn't seem to break (unlike the harder ones used in some other gunds.)

Some folks replace the plastic with after-market metal. But CZ does not recommend using steel guide rods in their compact alloy-framed weapons, and doing so could (if there is resulting wear) void the warranty for a wear-related problem. And the geometry of the shorter slide makes for a greaterl likelihood of wear as the slide retracts. (The guide rod must flip up at a bit higher angle.)

(I've got CZs with and without plastic. I've never noticed a difference in performance... The metal guide rods look better.)

Is your barrel blue is the finish from heat treatment? Mine (2 centerfire pistols) are darkened but not blued and had the smilies.
It is normal for the plastic guide rods to pick up a bend but they still work like they are meant to after 1,000 rounds.

Thanks everyone for all the info. It sounds like everything is normal with my P-01 regarding the barrel and guide rod. Exactly what I was hoping to hear.
This is my first CZ and without a single round down range yet I'm very impressed with the pistol.

Steve Bedair does good quality steel guide rods for the P-01 and some other CZ designs (but not the SP-01 -- apparently the guide rod for it has to have some flex to get into the pistol). I've got guide rods from him for both my P-01 and my Sig P220 and the 'rods are great and he was very good with communication and prompt in shipping when I bought them.

(I note this last primarily in contrast to Jack Ash Custom, where I first ordered a guide rod for my P-01, and who apparently just pocketed my money and never delivered. I don't think his website is still up, though, so maybe kind of a moot point.)

Jack Ash stole my money too! Maybe we should start a club. My Steve Bedair guide-rod is the cats meow and I highly recommend Steve's work. I put a lighter trigger spring on my P-01 and it now is like butter. It's the most accurate gun I own.
