OK, so I have been trying to make up my mind between the P-01 and the SP-01.
Here is my question to those of you who own both the SP-01 and the P-01.
I really like the grip of the P-01. A local store has one that I have held several times, but no one around here has a SP-01. Does the SP-01 grip feel exactly the same as the P-01 grip? Is it slightly different? Which has a better "perceived" balance?

I understand the whole "P-01 for ccw" "SP-01 for competition". I am leaning toward getting the SP-01 for USPSA use, but I recently found a P-01 locally for $375. Is this a good price for a P-01?
Is it worth spending the $300+ more for the Matt Mink SP-01?

Thanks for the input!

The SP-01 grip is somewhat larger, as evidenced by the magazine capacity. I haven't fired the SP-01 but have read that it feels more muzzle-heavy than other CZs including the P-01 and 75B. Supposedly it's softer shooting than the P-01 while the P-01 is better balanced.

I'd say $375 for a P-01 is a good price, especially if it's new. If I wanted a competition gun I'd probably lean toward the SP-01 due to the extra barrel length. If I wanted a carry gun, the choice is pretty obvious. As for $300 extra for a Matt Mink worked SP-01, I can't answer that. :)

I own both the SP01 Tactical and a P01. My wife also has a P01. The SP01 Tactical is a 9mm decocker, just like the P01. Both P01's are carried pretty much daily.

Both the SP01 and P01 pistols are fantastic in their own right. The P01 is an excellent compromise... remember, every pistol is a compromise.

I find the SP01 easier to shoot. I have large hands and find the grip fits me better than the P01. The tritium sights are also much larger on the SP01 than the P01's regular sights, and I prefer the SP01 sight picture to that of the P01.

The P01 is a fine carry pistol. It represents an excellent compromise between a pocket gun and a full-size pistol.

I find both pistols well-balanced. Beware, the SP01 is, especially fully loaded (19+1), is really really heavy!

The price of $375 is an unbelievable price for a new P01. If you carry, grab the P01 and you won't be the least bit upset. As a bonus, you might find it fits your competition needs as well.

The SP01 single-action is next on my list. My wife and I fight over who gets to shoot the SP01 Tactical when we go to the range. Not good...:)

The CZ SP-01 is no wider then a normal CZ 75, and the P-01 IIRC. The only difference is that the SP-01 magazines are a little longer with a plastic extension covering up the extra length, you can use SP-01 magazines in any CZ 75, and I believe they even work in the P-01 with a gap since the frame is smaller.

Personally I user mostly Mec Gar (they make the CZ magazines now) CZ-75 magazines in my SP-01, they work fine, though I want to put in a +5% spring, and get the plastic base plate, so it's easier to grip.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I'm going to go ahead and save up for a worked over SP-01 for competition. I appreciate all of the comments!

What do you plan to compete in? For USPSA production you will have to shoot double action your first round, for limited you are a disadvantage because of the minor PF. I have a SP-01 and shoot USPSA, I think sometime early next year I will likely either get a STI 2011 or a CZ 75 Tactical Sport in 40 and shoot limited with it.

In IDPA it can be hard to get the SP-01 light enough to qualify for ESP, you need to change the main spring, remove the lanyard loop, and change the grips. You can find more information on lightening the gun on czshooters.com.

Just pointing out possible issues. For steel and other such competitions where there is no power factor, and you can shoot cocked and locked on a DA/SA gun, there is no cons.

Like stevemis, I've got both a P-01 and an SP-01. I have to echo the sentiment in the original post about SP-01 being preferable for a range gun or a service pistol (maybe -- it is hefty), while the P-01 is a nice compromise for CCW.

If you're planning on competition shooting, I'd go with the SP-01, provided it's legal for whatever division you're shooting in. For an all around pistol, the P-01 comes into its own, but strictly on the firing line it has a hard time competing with that heavy steel railed nose on the SP-01 and longer barrel/sight radius. My SP-01 is probably the pistol I shoot best outside my 1911s, especially fast -- that front heavy weight cuts muzzle flip down to practically nothing, even with hot 9mm loads.

As for the $375 price tag for a P-01 -- yes, it's an excellent price. They typically seem to run a bit of $500, so it's actually a steal.

The local group shoots USPSA. I don't own any .40s currently. (Not really wanting to get any either.) I guess I honestly would be competing more for the fun of it. Production class and limited are what I was primarily interested in.

My understanding is that "A" shots are the same points for both Major and minor - so it would only be shots in "B" and "C" etc areas that are going to hurt me right? Good incentive to improve!

With the regular non-tactical SP-01 - I should be able then to compete in USPSA: Production, Limited, and Limited-10, and also with the lightened grips I could use it for IDPA: SSP and ESP. Is this correct?

If that is the case, I think I would definately get my money's worth out of it.

I think I'll contact either Matt Mink or Angus once I get the money together.

One last question that might seem a bit weird, do any of you guys use your SP-01 or your competition guns as your car carry weapons as well?

I ask this, because between school and where I work, I have a very limited amout of time that I would need to/or could even carry on my person. 19+1 in a gun that you are very familiar with through competition seems like the ideal gun to have with you in a crisis. And this may not make much logic, but in the back of my mind - it would look better after a crisis to say that you shot someone in self defense with a gun that you normally use for shooting sports rather than a gun that you haul around just to haul around. See what I'm getting at?
Correct me if I'm off the deep end.
Thanks!

Congratulations

Deciding between a P-01 and an SP-01 is an enviable predicament to be in :D

I am having some difficulty myself in deciding between these two pistols for a carry gun, but I think I've decided to go with the SP-01 also. It feels perfect in my hand, much more natural to point than anything else I've held.

If I may hijack briefly... it's true that SP-01 magazines can be used with regular CZ 75s - regular-capacity CZ 75 magazines can be used with SP-01s, correct? I think I'd prefer that setup just to avoid the extra grip length, for CCW carry. Anybody do this?

Thanks, Ben

Here is my question to those of you who own both the SP-01 and the P-01.
Actually I don't own both, SP-01 and P-01 but I shoot both. IMO the trigger on SP-01 is slightly better. Due to the fact that the european version of SP-01 didn't have a firepin safety. So maybe not 100% safe as a CCW gun but for competition ok.

European version of SP-01 will supplied with 19rd magazine.

The sight of SP-01 is much better. Hase a fibre optic front sight and novak style rear sight. Sight radius of SP-01 is 6 mm longer.

I'm talking about european version, maybe vary from the US version!

Yeah the fiber optic sight sounds a lot like the SP-01 "Shadow". I would really like to get that one, but to my knowledge USPSA hasn't approved it. I do believe that IPSC has approved it though. Since my local club is USPSA, I'll have to stick with the regular SP-01 w/ manual safty and FPB. It looks like Angus sells them for around $650.

I assume it would be cheaper to just buy it from Angus direct than to buy it first and then send it to Matt Mink or Angus, correct?
