Have the CZ 75 Compact and asked my wife if she could rack the slide, no way .... Question, now I could start the pistol with a round in the chamber or maybe show her the rack the slide using the rear sight. Would the rear sight hold up?

Happy Holidays:)

Your not going to hurt the sight but racking the gun it's all that hard. Maybe if she's having problems use the technique were you hold the slide and push the frame.

This comes up a lot, with CZ and with other guns.

Have your wife hold the gun with her hand on the slide (in a comfortable holding position), maybe at waist height, with the barrel pointed downward (in a safe direction). Then cock the hammer, and tell her to PUSH the frame downward with her strong hand, while holding the slide. (If you find another way to hold it, fine...) Putting the hand OVER the slide, in front of the sights, works for some folks.

The trick is to hold the slide still while PUSHING the FRAME. It's easier (and takes less hand strength) to just hold the slide still than to hold it while also trying to move it, too!

Cocking the hammer first makes it easier, still. Going to a slightly lighter recoil spring will also help, and if you've got a full-size CZ, it'll do fine with a recoil spring of 12 - 15 pounds. MOre than that, it's a chore for most folks.

Cocking the hammer first is the key -- and, of course, keeping the trigger finger OUT of the trigger guard area.

I think that video is off. The key, IMO, is to use your torso to push the lower forward. Your off-hand simply holds the slide so it doesn't go forward, while your strong hand, locked close to your stomach, is the lever for the back muscles. Your hands and your arms do almost no work--the vastly stronger back and stomach muscles turn your body and strong arm slightly down range, which racks the lower while your weak hand holds the slide stationary. [EDIT: JUST LIKE WALT SAID IN THE PREVIOUS POST]

CZs, because of their design, leave very little grip on the slide to grasp. I always rack mine at half or full cock. The benefit is a low bore axis with less felt recoil.

It didn't matter what technique my wife used....she still could not rack a slide on any number of autos we tried. Finally settled on a revolver. If a person cannot reliably rack a slide EVERYTIME, then an auto is not for them.

I think in our case it was me trying to select her carry arm rather than her picking out her own. She is very comfortable with her S&W 360, is very proficient with it, and uses a speed loader as quick as someone can change a magazine.

That is why I got my wife an LCR for Christmas.

I am sure others have said it, but have her cock the hammer first, then use the technique Walt described. If she can not do it then, a different semi auto with a lighter recoil spring, or a revolver would work.

Is she trying the "overhand" stuff that's popular these days, or is she pinching the back of the slide between her thumb and the side of her index finger?

There was a 72 year old woman in my office that came to me for gun advice for HD. I advised her to get a medium frame S&W revolver in 38spl, and even brought in a model 15 that I would have sold her cheap, even though I didn't really want to.

A few months later, she brings her LEO trade in Glock 22 for me to see. She had no problems racking the slide, or with 40cal recoil. You just never know.

Keepitreal, no. She can pull the trigger double action, no problem there

I was trying to show her "Walts" way. I had just been to the Cornored Cat site

First time I had a pistol handling test happened when I bought this CZ 75 Compact, racking the slide was not easy. The Kimber Pro Carry HD 4" is way easier.

Been hoping to get the wife interested in shooting

I agree with putting your hand over the slide to rack...as opposed to a thumb/finger pinch at the rear of the slide. Works for me on my CZ compact, which is admittedly stiff.

I pretty much do that on most of my guns now. A habit that started out of necessity with my Keltec P 11.

Where are you located, I would be happy to show you and easy way to rack it if you are local to South FL. It's much easier than trying to explain it.
But it is an overhand grip, and a push of the frame with the strong hand.
Did you try racking an empty gun, and then inserting the magazine with the slide locked back?
