I've been wanting one of these things for over a year now. When the chance to get one came up, I jumped on it. Coming in from West Virginia, it was a long long wait.
Yesterday I checked shipping and found that my P-01 arrived. I ran out to get to get it pronto. When I got there, I found that I had enough cash for the transfer the gun but not enough for a box of ammo. Crap!
So here I am, fondling this awesome handgun – and I can’t shoot it because I poured all my 9MM into the Baby Eagles. So I am flat broke, out of ammo (9MM) and I’m just itching to go shoot this thing!
The one I looked at before had some wood grips on it, and it looked nice. And it felt really nice too. I fell in love with the P-01 right there. This gun arrived, still in the plastic, still in the sticky goo. That’s what you call brand new. I don’t think anyone has even touched the gun since it was boxed up in the Czech Republic. The gun comes with checkered soft rubber grips that are contoured very nicely to fit ones hand perfectly. In my hand, it’s an absolute perfect fit. No, I’m not going to get Hakan grips for it – these are perfect. I will have to get a stainless steel guide rod from 12 Volt.
The gun points better than I remember, feels better than I remember. The decocker lever that is in the position of a traditional thumb safety is designed to allow a very high grip while staying out of the way and not risking an accidental decock under stress. It might look odd in pictures, but once you take a shooting grip, you will see what I mean. This is different, and different is good. All the controls are located properly and work as advertised. Cycling the action by hand, it feels smooth and sure… solid. It will feel even better once I get the packing grease out of the gun, clean it up and lube it properly.
This compact CZ also fits perfectly into my old trusty High Desert Leather belt slide… like it’s been waiting for it. But I think I’m going to have to order a good scabbard for it from HBE. If this gun shoots as good as it looks, fits, feels… oh man.
I think I may have just reached Handgun Heaven… Velocity Valhalla. This will be the subject of my next review article I write.
The only downside is that this thing came with 2 10 rounders so I'll have to get some regular mags for it.

Cool!

Congrats on your new purchase George :) Sounds like you've found what you've been looking for :)

SS guide rod will definetely make some difference, it made for my full size CZ75 B.Good choice of holster for that baby...let me know if change your mind about using rubber...grips ;)

Regards,

Hakan.

What is it with this new CZ??
I do not pay any attention to CZ's because, without exception, the grips of them are to big for my hand. On the .45 model, I cannot even reach the trigger!! Whch leads me to this. If the awesome thing about this gun is that the girth of the butt stock has been significantly reduced, then, HUZZAH!!! I may be interested! :D

The PO1 is perfect. I put away the Witness 40 I had been carrying for 13+ years right after I shot my PO1. This is my all the time everything pistol. Well done.

GH, Congrats. I want one so bad I can taste it. I was even willing to trade my XD for it, but trade in price is a joke at best at the shop that does it locally. I just need to buckle down and save.

denfoote:

If you had trouble reaching the trigger on a 75B, I doubt the P-01 will be much better for you. The grip on the P-01 is in the same place as the 75B, but it is a little wider now. The P-01 does have a new curved trigger though to help with reach and pull feel. Play with one in a shop and see what you think.

The trigger reach is better on the P-01.

I found it easier to reach and squeeze although I have no trouble with the 75B's stock trigger.

I'm debating between a P-01 and a S&W 1076 right now. The P-01 would make a great carry weapon, but 10mm is my newest obsession.

denfoote, you must have small hands or short fingers or something... for me, the P-01's stock grips are like I've squeezed a lump of clay. Reach to the trigger, even in DA mode is just about perfect. In SA mode, it's very short.
I get paid tomorrow... have to wait till I can go shooting. Arrrggghhh!! I hate that!

Congrats on your new purchase. Post some pics and a range report once you get some ammo. This may be the last handgun of the year for me, once I aquire some more funds. Might be picking up a CZ rifle at the same time....hehehe

The only downside is that this thing came with 2 10 rounders so I'll have to get some regular mags for it.

George,

You need to czech out the ProMag CZ75 COMPACT 40 S&W 10RD BLU mags as sold by Natchez Shooters Supply. Stock number ZMMAG12. I currently have 6 of these that I use with both my CZ P-01 and my CZ 40P. They fit perfectly and have functioned flawlessly. Holds 14 rounds of 9mm.

Natchez currently has them listed as in-stock for $11.42 each.

BTW, my P-01 rides in one of Eric's belt holsters. Nothing better.

The PCR Forever guy has a P-01??? What temprature is HELL now?

denfoote, I had the same problem handling the CZ75, but the P-01 is a perfect fit in the hand, you will not have any problems reaching the trigger on the P-01....drf

I bought a P01 for my son when they first came out.

He's 15, (Yikes! He's 16 tomorrow!) lives in NY with his mother, and loves shooting. Whenever he comes down here to visit, I try to get him to go to Orlanda, or NASA, someplace like that, but he just wants to go to the range, so I thought I would get him a gun he can call his own.

We discussed various brands, and with some guidance from me, he decided on the P01. They were just hitting the stores then, so I grabbed one. When he came down, several months later, both he and I got to shoot it.

It handles recoil beautifully, comes back on target easily. George is right: everything is in the right place. There aren't many guns that have that feel. After just a mag or two it had your total confidence that it's just "right." To me, SIGs have it, 1911's have it, and the P01 has it. Together, we put about 300 rounds through it (about 250/50 him to me) and I was thrilled that it was such a quality piece, and that he enjoyed it so much.

..Joe

PS: George- Think it's tough waiting a few days to afford ammo to shoot it? I told my boy that because it's his, I won't shoot it unless he's here with me. He told me to go ahead and shoot it whenever I want, but I don't because it's his, and I want him to know that, so it's a safe queen except for a couple of weeks each year. How tough do you think it is NOT to shoot it? :)

Yup! I just love my PCR to pieces. I would like to get a P-01 trigger for it, but that's not a pressing issue. Mine rides in either a High Noon Hidden Impact or a Hidden Ally. Honestly, other than a recurring longing for something in .45 caliber, and perhaps bigger/brighter sights (XS Big Dots, anyone?) I am utterly happy with it.

Excellent Choice

Good buy George. It's my first pistol, got 2 more pistols (G19 & Kahr MK9)after it and I still love the P-01 the most. I use it almost everyday for duty use and it's range time is 3 fold of that of the others: no disrespect to them. The P-01 sits above anything I've shot so far. The steel guide rod is worth picking up, trust.

I had one and loved the way it shot, but hated the way it carried. For some reason, I had a heck of a time with the grip printing really badly. I don't seem to have the same problem with the 75B :scrutiny: .

I just wish that CZ would come out with an alloy framed CZ75B Compact. That would be perfect to me.

Congratulations on your purchase though, they are really great guns.
