What can you guys tell me about CZ shotguns, the semi-autos in particular? They are relatively cheap when compared to Benelli, Beratta and others. I've had no experience with them and am researching them for a friend who is looking for shotguns that are inexpensive yet reliable. I know CZ makes good rifles and pistols. I will appreciate any help you can offer. Tom

CZ shotguns aren't actually made by cz. They are made by huglu, a Turkish company. When they first hit the market in the US, they were not great and a lot of what you'll find on Google is from back then.

However, I believe they've come a long way and are now a very reliable shotgun. If you check out shotgunworld forums and go to the huglu lovers section, you'll find an extremely comprehensive review on the cz 912 and most of their other offerings.

I myself have been researching budget semiauto shotguns for a while now and just purchased a 912. Waiting for it to show up. I also have first hand experience with cz's customer service (I own several cz pistols) which is outstanding. I know if i run into problems, I'll be taken care of.

One negative thing is a lack of aftermarket options being a relatively new gun. For me it came down to the mossberg 930 or the cz. I found a great price and it just looked so much better so i went with the cz lol. The 712 has many more stock and barrel length options and will also take aftermarket recoil pads. But the 912 sure is a looker.

Anyway that's what I've come up with on my long search for a shotgun and I'll provide an update once i actually get mine but I'm sure I'll love it.

If you are looking for a hunting/clays shotgun you can buy a Beretta A300 Outlander for $650. You can also buy the Weatherby SA-08 and the Stoeger M3000 for around $500. I would choose those ahead of a CZ semiauto.

They work.

I sold a 712 to a friend and have heard nothing but praises. I also traded for a 912. Shot a few clays with it and it functioned fine. I didn't care for the funky stock and sold it. The semi- autos are made with the same quality as the CZ o/u. Good wood to metal fit and decent finish. I am not impressed with the metal finish but the matte is here to stay as a cost cutter. It is a lot cheaper to finish over a blemish than to put on a high polish and blue.

All in all, the CZ is a decent buy, but for the same price you can have a Weatherby.

the m3000 (I believe) and the sa-08 (made by either ata or Armsan) are turkish made. Wouldn't surprise me if some other big name brands sell a turkish shotgun. Now, they are not all created equal (several different companies, hatsan, armsan, ATA, yildiz, sarsilmaz) but just because it is turkish is not a reason to turn your nose up at it. I have a tristar viper myself (made by armsan), and while it is not as good as my benelli m2, it cost $900 less.

that said, I think huglu is probaly the worst of the turkist mfg's. The equivalent of Chrysler in american made cars)
