I recently bought a CZ52 that is in nice (probably refinished) condition. It came from Century and was described as excellent. Other than one of the grips being pretty scratched up, it looks fine. BUT, the pencil test revealed that the decocker is unsafe - when I insert a pencil in the barrel of the unloaded gun and activate the decocker, the pencil pops right out of the barrel. My question is: Should I return this to Century? How difficult is it to fix? I could live without using the decocker (I routinely lower the hammer manually on double-action autos - though I'm using the decockers more and more as time goes on). I haven't fired it yet. I'm tempted to not worry about this and just never use the decocker - but if I can get it fixed easily, that would probably be preferable. What do you think?

I'm not familiar with the CZ52's inner workings either get it fixed or return it. That's a ND waiting to happen.

I'm with the "disable it completely" group. Unless you plan to keep it all original for historical purposes. The last thing you need is some knucklehead shooting it other than yourself and actually "relying" on a decocker and shooting where he shouldn't.
I'm not real fond of decockers anyway, there's too much riding on it working 100% of the time.

I've got one that I am waiting to pick up from my FFL friend. (Here in California we can only get 1, yes 1 hand gun a month - it's for our own good you know - just like their so called safety testing) It would be nice to get more real Californian's back in charge of this state, instead of the Hollywood left and animal rights activits. The new Goobiner still has a lot to prove to me about common sense when it comes to hand gun laws!

Anyway......I digress.....I tested my decocker the way you described and the pencil didn't move.

I always thought the 52's were fixed over yonder for this problem years ago.Guess not.
No certainly not. There are a lot of them out there that have bad decockers. One of mine is bad too. I just ignore it. A decocker on a single action is just a silly, useless contraption anyway.

Good point though Worli, about lending it to someone. I don't plan on doing that, but I guess I should fix it for that reason only.

Sending it back to Century will be a waste of time unless you want your money back. A lot of them have non-functional decockers and Century isn't fixing them. In fact, I don't know of anyone who's fixing them.

Live with it, is my advice. Just pretend there isn't a decock function. A lot of CZ-52 owners don't know it's there anyway.

The easiest way I can think of is to put a small pin or screw in the frame to stop the lever from going far enough to decock.

The importers did fix a bunch of them.

But that was during the first wave of CZ-52's that hit the U.S. shores. Now that they're importing more of them, it wouldn't hurt to call up SOG or Century and ask them again. My own CZ-52 fails the pencil test. I just quit using the decocker, and it works fine. It really passes the Star-Line brass flinging test. :(
