So... here's an interesting one.
A friend of mine is an FBI Special Agent. Her late father was a retired US Army General. Get a call from her to come see her late fathers "M-16" that was given as a gift to him when he retired from the Army. She sends me a photo and it's a 1977 SP-1 Pencil-Barrel AR-15, which is something I would want as a collectors item. We agree on a price. Looking at the photos closer: Wouldn't you know that there's the evil hole above the selector? Had her open it up and the lower has been machined very professionally for the sear (which is installed). Bottom line... Machinegun. No ands, ifs or buts.
She's OBVIOUSLY wanting to do the correct thing, has contacted her attorney, and there will not be any legal errors made with it.
With that said, the possibilities are two:
1: We have a pre-86 registered M-16 here, that she's quite happy to get $1500 for if I want to do the paperwork to buy it from the estate. Uhh.. OK!
OR
2: Pop was the recipient of the illegal largesse of some armorer way back in the 70's and what we have is something that needs to be cut into pieces, saving the parts to build a nice retro AR out of.
The problem is that in the huge mass of paper he left behind it's not possible to sort thru it all "right now" to try to find the Form 4 or Form 1 that would have been used back then. She doesn't even know what they look like. Is there an easy way to run this past the BATFE in Martinsburg to see if the serial number is in the NFA Registry or not? We need to determine this in order to take the correct course of action. I'll feed the info back to her attorney. Need to figure this out ASAP as bandsaw time is going to come fast if we don't get this cleared up.
