Took the new Ruger and put it thru its paces alongside the tried and true Sistema. 20181212_184035.jpg
The Ruger I don't believe had been shot much, if at all, before it came to me. Ran about 100 rounds thru it, a hodgepodge of factory fmj, reloads, hollowpoints...a few days before this most recent trip. Not so much as a hiccup. I didn't clean it between trips. Nor did I clean the Sistema, that probably had residue from at least 350 rounds still in it. But the Ruger started choking after 50 rounds or so this last time out Just didn't want to go all the way into battery. A little forward assist and it would fire no problem. Took it apart and cleaned and lubed it best I could while at the range, and it was better, but far from perfect. Accuracy between the two I'd say is equal, just think it funny that the Sistema will run dirty, dry, gritty...whatever you throw at it, where the Ruger wants to be cleaned after 150 rounds. I've had a few 1911's now, and a few 1911ish (read "Llama") type guns, but all were well used before I got them. The Ruger is definitely the newest and nicest one I've had, and certainly the most accurate out of the box...just need to shoot it a lot more, or polish up the rails to bring the reliability up (suggestions welcome)...can't have a gun that doesn't like getting dirty in the safe...the other guns in there may start making fun of it...can't have that:D

Bersaguy, a small comment the Sistema is closer to 50 year old and will cycle with ball ammo all day long (please check the barrel link,) may be the Ruger is still need more range time to run as spectated.
Btw enjoy beautiful guns.

Thanks! ...that's what I'm saying, having a new 1911 is a bit like raising teenage boys. They're fully capable, tons of potential....just intermittently moody...need some experience before they start behaving properly;)

My “commamder” sized Ruger has been flawless so far with about 500 mostly 230 gr FMJ rounds through it, maybe I’m lucky. I will admit I haven’t shot 200 straight in one sitting through it, maybe I’ll gunk it up a bit with a bunch of shots and see if it hiccups after 200-300 like you’ve described.

I do like the Ruger-branded 1911 mags, those have been great in all 3 of my 1911-pattern .45’s.

I shoot that gun into tighter groups than my SA Loaded 5” 1911. I think it’s the sights on the Ruger that are clearer to my orbs than the SA that make it more accurate for me.

For the $$, I think the Ruger 1911’s aren’t a bad buy at all. They’re certainly not a Les Baer or Wilson Combat tuned runner, but they’re also not $1,900 and up to get into one...

Let us know what you do to the Ruger and the results of your tweaks .

Stay safe!

Asking out of curiosity. Did you clean & lube the Ruger before you began your experiment?

I've had my SR 1911 since about 2012. The only problem I've had out of it function wise was when I first got it. About once every magazine I would get hit in the head with spent brass. I went on line & researched & tuned the extractor & all has been well since then. I really like mine but it is my only 1911 so I guess I really don't have any thing to compare it with.

Were you able to clean out the extractor tunnel? If not, it might be a good idea. Once crud gets in there feeding and or extracting can get a little fussy.

I should probably be able to get out today and run some rounds through it today. I didn't clean it up before I shot it. Got it used, but in the original box, barrel and magwell were clean, I could tell the sights had been adjusted form the light brass punch marks on the side of the rear sight. I had just assumed it had been shot a bit. If it gives me any trouble, I'll strip the slide and give it the once over twice
