Dallas cops get needed firearms by donation

I recall a couple of times my unit got gifts of larger firepower/equipment than we really needed for any conceivable engagement, handed down from more weapon-heavy units.

"Wow, thanks! That's really generous. Yes, we appreciate it. Sure, get some photos for the Base paper."

"Okay, Readiness, Training, Aggressors, who wants to give this a try? Meet us at the range at 1300."

"Wow, that _IS_ cool. Expensive to maintain and a pain to lug around, though."

"Oh, those? Yeah, they're still crated in the back. Haven't opened them up this year, in fact. Why?"

"Sir, we could donate those things to that other unit heading over to the Sandbox. Be good points, and we could ask them for some additional support gear we actually WILL use."

"Yeah, we swapped the two of them and got all THIS. Everyone grab some. No, EVERYONE is getting new rain gear, sleeping bags, extra canteens and the new helmets, and we acquired another trailer, too."

Those with experience: Any bets?

Regarding the body armor of the North Hollywood gunman, my source is the excellent documentary the History Channel did on the event. It part of their "Shootout" series, which gives basically blow-by-blow accounts of famous gunfights.

An excellent series; I really enjoy it myself, and watch it when I can.

Unfortunately, they have the majority of the story, but not the whole thing--at least that's what I believe.

My source is a 25 year veteran of LAPD, who retired as a Detective--and who responded that day.

I forgot to add that the one gunman was wearing a trauma plate (not to be confused with a III+ rifle plate, as I understand it). That may be what your source was referring to.

Having served as an 11B infantryman, I am having a very hard time understanding how a police department will properly employ a .50 caliber weapon in an urban environment, without being more threat to everyone else besides the hypothetical "threat".

The last time I saw .50BMG used on an automobile, it went right through it, like it was a cardboard target. That could be a bit rough on the folks across the steet.

.308 or .30-06 with the right ammunition will nicely handle just about any vehicle on the road, most armored bad guys, and will satisfactorily dispatch most escaped livestock, wildlife, or zoo critters.

Assuming of course, that the shooter can make the necesary shot placement.
