4 cops injured after 9-hour ordeal

DALLAS - A daylong standoff between police and a gunman ended yesterday with the man and two other people dead and four officers wounded. Seven children and an adult who had been held as hostages were released unharmed after the second standoff in two months between the gunman and cops.
SWAT team officers killed Francisco Fuentes, 32, who had held them at bay for nine hours and fired twice at officers.
Police found two other men dead in the apartment, apparently shot by Fuentes before police arrived to investigate reports of gunfire, spokesman Sgt. Gil Cerda said.
Police were questioning the woman who had been held hostage, Cerda said. Fuentes was father to at least two of the children, police said.
In early September, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a five-hour standoff with police in the nearby suburb of Lancaster. Police Commander Pat Stallings said Fuentes had barricaded himself alone in a house after shooting at a man's car.
Fuentes was also accused of interfering with child custody and violation of a protective order, and was free on $25,000 bond.
When police were summoned to the apartment, the children told them Fuentes was in a bedroom with a gun. Fuentes wounded three officers when they entered the bedroom, Cerda said. The officers retreated after they were wounded, and four children were freed at that time.
Over the next few hours, Fuentes released the three other children and the woman, authorities said.
Eventually, police filled the apartment with tear gas, then burst inside. They killed Fuentes when he fired at them, wounding the fourth cop.
All of the wounded cops were in good condition, authorities said.

Sounds like he was a time bomb just waiting to explode. An apartment is one of the worst places to get into a shoot out, no cover!
