Bill to allow guns in gloveboxes clears Senate

Richmond, VA - People would be allowed to store guns in a locked glovebox or other interior compartment of a vehicle or boat even if they lack a concealed weapons permit under legislation that passed the Senate on Monday.

Gov. Timothy Kaine vetoed similar legislation in 2006 for fear that it could endanger law enforcement officers. The Senate voted 31-9 to pass the bill, within the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override a veto.

Under current law, motorists without concealed weapons permits may put guns on the seat beside them in plain view. Republican Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel said her bill was needed to protect children who may be in the vehicle.

Jill Vogel is my hero. I've written her office a couple times and got back an actual signed letter stating she's very pro 2A and will do all she can to further the 'cause'.

My recollection is that some states have allowed loaded handguns in unlocked glove boxes and/or consoles with or without concealed weapons permits for many years. If my memory is accurate, South Carolina is one of those states and I don't recall that even one law abiding person has attacked even one law enforcement officer there as a consequence.

It seems dangerous to keep a loaded handgun--or any heavy metal object-- loose on a seat while driving. Virginia's Gov. Kaine thinks funny to me.

Now, as long as they don't turn this around and use it against us saying that open carrying puts children at risk and banning OC in cars.
