I saw an old Dan Wesson revolver at a gun show over the weekend. I think it was a Model 11, but I'm not sure. It had a 4 inch barrel, fixed sights, and an external, star-shaped barrel nut. The guy wanted $175 for it.

How are these old guns? Are the newer, internal nut shroud systems compatible with the earlier guns?

DW Mod. 11

Got one of those. Strong as hell, accurate and heavy.

Some of the barrels are interchangable between the old style (M11-12) guns and the later stuff, but the hard part is the barrel shroud that is peculiar to those early guns. I think some M14 models had the M11 style shroud with the recessed barrel nut, you could then use the M14 shroud and barrel on the M11.

The "special" barrel nut tool for these old guns is a 5/8" 12 point socket.

My gun is a 4" barrel, and I've seen 2" for sale. There may be an available M12 6" barrel and shroud that would (should) work, too.

Parts and repairs still available from CZ USA, who bought DW out.

As has been said, the M-11 was the fixed sight version of the original DW revolver line. Aside from its rather strange looking muzzle nut, it's essentially the same as the later models. In any kind of decent condition I'd spring $175 for one in a heartbeat.

As the late Skeeter Skelton related in his test/revue article in "Shooting Times" back in the early '70s, he had loaned his test piece (a Model 12) to a local ranch worker (along with a supply of his handloads) in order to get another opinion on it for his article. When the cowboy ran out of his free ammo and brought it back, Skeeter told us that his comment was "Whal, she ain't the purtiest thang I ever seen, 'til you pull the trigger. Then she gets beeyootiful!"
