A store near me has a used DW Pointman Minor for $500. Its is good shape (probably 97-98%). I know next to nothing about Dan Wesson...except they got bought out by CZ and now the prices are higher.

I'm looking for a 1911 that I can tinker with...learn to checker the front strap, sight replacement, barrel fitting, etc. Is this a good platform for a tinkering 1911?

Thanks in advance.

Let me direct to the Dan Wesson forum. Check out the stickies. That seem like a good price on a Pointman Minor especially if it OTD. I don't know how much tinkering a Dan Wesson would need, but then again tinkering is alway fun. If you'll read through the post you'll find they're pretty trouble free.

Honestly? I'd say bail on it and get a new SA Milspec or perhaps the base S&W (I've seen numerous ones of those for $650 NIB). DW people are a loyal bunch, but I remember once back in the day there was a poll in the DW section where they asked how many had had SOME sort of problem, and the options were had a problem, sent it back, resolved, sent it back not resolved, never a problem, minor problem, seriosu problem, etc, etc, and something like 80% had had SOME sort of problem, whether it was small and taken care of or fixed themselves or whatever. Plus, the pointman I believe has a cast frame, and paying that much for a cast frame model when there are machined ones for the same or less just doesn't seem right.

I'll probably get flamed by the fans for that opinion, but I get the feeling it may be your first 1911, and IMO there would be better options.

I have a DW 1911 and a SA GI 1911. Both are great guns and get the McNutt stamp of approval, but the DW is a much more refined gun. I bought my SA as a gun I could customize and it should be good for that. But that DW Minor should be just as good for customizing and probably won't feel as rough around the edges as the SA.

BTW - I've never had a problem with my DW. I admit that there were a decent number of posters in the DW forum with problems, but even those guys were loyal DW fans.
