Danger with a gun in hand

When it comes to these spree shootings, their high profile coverage in the 24 hour news cycle can artificially inflate their relative frequency. Yes, it's a tragedy that X number of people were killed. But that number pales compared to the full number of firearms fatilities, often concentrated in low income, high density population areas. The production of those was the fallout from Suburbanization in the 50's.

Once a person reaches that state, they have completely ceased to think for themselves, so they are beyond convincing.

Some people find religion, others find governance. A "religion" with imperfect "gods" as corrupt, petty, and capricious as those from Greco-Roman times.
Agreed, when we have a society whose subservience to any set of rules without thinking for themselves takes precedence over critical thinking, we are effectively setting ourselves back millennia in human history.

I for one would not prefer to have our lives ruled by blind faith with no rational support.

No increase necessarily, but perception thereof.

We have 312,000,000 people in this country, give or take a couple million. Every few years a screwball or two go on a nut and shoot the place up. They never do it in a place where people that may be capable of defending themselves may be, but where their victims have been disarmed.

This goes back to post #2, but it seems to permeate this discussion as a premise and it isn't true. Lots of these shootings occur at places where guns could be carried and often places where CCW folks could and sometimes do respond, sometimes effectives and sometimes with their mouth afterwards and how they could have made a difference. For example.

Giffords shooting
Tacoma Mall
Springfield Mall (Sylvia Seegrist)
Carson City, NV IHOP
Courthouse Square, Tyler, Texas
Colorado church shooting (stopped by member acting as security guard)
Copley Community, Ohio (Michael E. Hance, killed 7, Ohio)
Detroit Police Station (4 officers injured)
2004 Hunter shooting in Wisconsin
December 2007 - a woman and her boyfriend shot dead six members of her family on Christmas Eve in Carnation, Washington.
December 2008 - Santa Claus opened fire at a family party in Covina, CA, set the house on fire, committed suicide (8+1).
March 2009 - Six killed in apartment building in Santa Clara, CA
New Year's Eve 1972 to 7 January 1973 - Mark James Robert Essex killed 9 (including 5 police officers) and wounded 13 more (including 5 more officers), starting his spree by attacking a New Orleans Police Department jail facility

In various cases, the bgs show up expecting armed response.
