Some of you may remember the Danish pizzeria owner who refused to serve French and German tourists because their governments would not support the USA and Britain in the war against Iraq. He was discussed in this thread, this one and this one.

Well, he's been convicted of "discrimination", and his conviction has been upheld on appeal, so he's facing a jail sentence (since he refuses to pay a fine). From the Telegraph, London (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai...za21.xml&sSheet=/news/2003/08/21/ixworld.html):

Jail for pizza man who barred Germans

A Danish pizzeria owner who refused to sell pizzas to Germans or Frenchmen because of their governments' stance on the war in Iraq is to go to prison.

An appeal court upheld the conviction yesterday of Niels-Aage Bjerre for discrimination and his fine of £500. He said he would refuse to pay and will instead spend eight days in jail.

"I will not pay the fine but I'll do the time instead," said Bjerre. "It is a matter of principle."

He has closed his pizzeria, on the Danish holiday island of Fanoe rather than be forced to serve German and French nationals.

Bjerre instituted the boycott in February and was reported to the authorities after an incident three months later when he found that a couple he had served was German.

Then Bjerre promptly retrieved their pizzas, returned their money and told them to leave.

He said yesterday that both the courts and those who had reported him to the authorities were "traitors".

"The judges have chosen to support those who do not support the official Danish position on the war against Iraq."

His boycott would end only "if the governments of France and Germany change their attitude toward the United States and support Washington wholeheartedly," he added.

After he has served his sentence in an open prison, which is unlikely to take place for at least another two months due to overfilled Danish jails, Bjerre said he planned to sell frozen pizzas over the internet, hopefully to the American market.

"My internet home page will say quite clearly: no pizzas for the Germans," he warned.

I'll take all he's got!! - if he can arrange for the Danish Bikini Team to deliver them!!!!!!!!!!:neener: :neener:

I was listening to Mr. Boortz's show when Neal got him on the phone and ordered a frozen one, shipped by fastest method, just to thank the guy!

I'm sure you all would have no problem being judged and ostracized based on the actions of various US administrations, whether you agreed with them or not, and regardless of your vote...?

Bigotry.

I have to agree with boing.

While I think the man has the right to serve whoever he chooses to, it seems he did break the law.

[EDIT] BTW, nice misleading thread title Preacherman. He isn't being jailed for supporting the USA, he's being jailed because he discriminated against Germans. On top of that he's being jailed because he decided he would rather go to jail than pay a fine.

Edited again for clarity.

"I'm sure you all would have no problem being judged and ostracized based on the actions of various US administrations, whether you agreed with them or not, and regardless of your vote...?"

You make it sound as if the goverments of Germany and France are conceptually at odds with their people, Boing.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The German and French populations were largely behind their governments in opposing US actions in Iraq.

The Danish guy might have been out on a limb, but it was still a pretty thick limb on which to stand.

And the title's not misleading. It was his predicate support of the US position that resulted in his refusal to serve Germans and French. While he was convicted of discrimination, it still ties in to his political stance.

OK, so tell me what percentage of French or German citizenry has to be at odds with their government before you allow individuals from that nation to be judged by the "content of their character", and not by the political position of the simple majority?

If only 10% of the citizens speak up in support of the US, then it's OK to treat them like dirt because you have a "pretty good chance" of getting your licks in on the ones you hate? You know, better safe than sorry.

Give me a number that defines when the individuality of the minority may be disregarded, for sake of venting your spleen?

It's bigotry. It's a small and petty example, so who cares, but that's what it is.

Said it before. I don't approve of the guy's position (treat all <nationality> based on the way <government> acts), but I fail to see how his choice of who he chooses to serve is a criminal matter. If he doesn't want to serve Jews, blacks, French, Irish, Italians, other Danes, Americans, gun owners, tall women, short men, redheads or androids, that's his call.

I agree with Mike. Bring him over here where he's less likely to suffer fines or jail time for his business decisions.
