I wear my AWESOME Oakley SI Assault Boots almost everyday, so I was thinking of getting a second pair of quality boots to give the Oakleys a rest now and then!

:D :neener: :D

I was considering, based on all the good stuff I have read about them, getting my first pair of DANNER boots.

I have my eye on some Danner tactical boots being sold on ebay.

Quick questions:

Do the Danner's run "true to size?

If I normally wear size 11.5 boots, what size Danner should I get?

Thanks...

Which one do you consider their "tactical" line? Is this the relatively new Stryker series or do you also refer to their military line (e.g. the Fort Lewis boot referenced above)?

I have four pairs of Danners, none of which are of the Stryker line. My Danners run true to size, they are just a bit narrow. This may require you to purchase their low-profile bedsole if the fit is too tight or wear thinner sox.

Tactical they are not, but I've got a pair of Danner hunting boots that are very comfortable and well-made. They also run true-to-size. If this particular model is an example of the rest of their line, I am impressed.

I've been wearing a pair of Danner's Desert Arcadias (the same boot that went to Iraq with a lot of our guys) for about six months. Most comfortable field boot I've ever worn, and one of only a few that did not require a break-in period.

I wear Danners at work. They run the same size as most other boots. I wish I could wear the Oakleys but we are required to wear steel toes. I had that very conversation in the middle of the night last night with someone from another agency who was wearing Oakleys.
The Danners I wear are extremly heavy, the steel toe hurts everytime you squat down, and after a couple days they stink like you wouldn't believe. My partner and I make jokes about it all the time: Did a coyote just vomit up some roadkill or did you take off your boots ? Did somebody open a car door that was out in the sun for a week with a decomposing body in it or did you just take off your boots ? Is the sewer backed up, or did you just take off your boots ? Did you just fall in an outhouse or did you take off your boots ? Does somebody have a GI Bleed or did you take off your boots ? :D
That is why I have three pairs. Once one pair starts to get ripe I switch. I end up wearing one pair about two days every couple weeks the way our work schedule plays out.

I think this is a good idea -- for any footwear. If you're going to be wearing the same footwear for daily use, you need more than one pair ... two minimum and three is even better. Rotating your footwear allows the leather to air out (breathe) on the "off" days.

I learned the above the hard way, before business casual became the standard. Wearing suits every day required me to buy multiple pairs to avoid wearing out my shoes on an accelerated basis.

Note: the above is not an endorsement for "metrotacticality". :D If you have more tactical boots/shoes than Emelda Marcos has regular shoes, I cannot help you.

My partner came up with a good one last night. We went on a call in a one bedroom apartment. Living there was one woman, an unknown number of kids and a dog. As soon as we walked in it didn't smell too good. Then after we were there for a couple minutes someone decided to change the baby about five feet away from us.
After we left my partner turned to me and said, "I didn't know if you had slipped off your boots or someone was changing a baby".

Another vote for Danner Ft. Lewis Go Devils. I've owned two pair, buying the first pair in 1990. They did two years on active duty at Ft. Wainwright including everyday duty wear, road marches, glacier climbs, hunting and fishing trips, and and addtional five years as duty boots when I transitioned from the military into civilian police work. They even went with me to the DPS Academy, every school and in-service training until they finally fell off my feet in 1997. I wore them almost every day up to that point. I believe they would have lasted much longer had I taken better care of the leather. The soles would have needed to be replaced no matter what.
I replaced them with my second pair within a week and they are still going strong. I've taken better care of them since, and although they are 7 years old, they still look almost new.
I've have long ago made up my mind that my serious boots are always going to be Danners. Double H Matterhorns would be a close second as both are approved by the miltary as alternative footwear.
Odor Eaters can be beneficial.:D
