I'm about to go over to the dark side- polymer pistol crowd. Don't get me wrong I still love my 1911's; but, helping a friend decide on the perfect pistol for him & his wife (both novice pistol shooters) led me to want the same pistol for myself- an SA XD-9 Service model. I've had a Sig and a Glock, but this one is better than both of them for less money. It encloses the case head much better than the Glock, takes down like a Sig, has good balance, and shoots well. Trigger is like a Glock, but for some reason feels better. Also, the grip fits my hand much better than the Glock- it's more like a 1911.

I have to try one of those. Everyone who gets their hands on an XD comes back with that 'I...neeeeed this gun' look on their face. There must be something about them.

I think they're hideous looking, which is pretty much a deal-breaker for me...I know, how 'untactical' :) But I still want to try one.

I have a four inch 9mm XD. I really like it.

So far it has been 100% reliable but I have only put about 1,000 rounds through it.

When it can prove it can handle ten times that amount of shooting without malfunctions or parts breaking like my Glocks then it will have proven itself to me as being as good as the Glock.

I got rid of my XD9 Bi-tone a while ago and I still regret it. Recently, I bought an XD40 Service and I really like it. I should've bought the 40 to begin with. The recoil difference is negligible.

It's accurate and the trigger has really smoothed out.

You and your friend would not go wrong by getting an XD.

Have you tried a Walther P99 QA? I have the P99 AS model, which has the more traditional DA/SA trigger. But if you like the consistency of the Glock, then you'd probably like the QA.

I find my Walther is my most comfortable gun. The ergonomics are perfect for me. I have a 9mm, but it comes in .40 S&W, too. I can't say enough good things about my Walther! I like it better than either my Sig P228 or Glock 17.

You owe it to yourself to at least fondle...er, handle, one!

Navy Guy's Walther

Navy Guy- haven't tried the Walther, but it is a nice looking pistol. My friend's XD-9 just felt so good in my hand, and shot so good for a light, 4" pistol that I had to have one! BTW I'm a former Navy "spook" (CTR-2). :)

Widebody or Polymer 1911's

Longbow- those won't work for me because I have rather small hands. The standard 1911 has always been perfect for me; and now the XD grip also fits me real well.

I bought one of the early pistol's that were still marketed by the manufactuer and called HS2000, It was a very nice shooter and the gun felt nice in my hands! The one I bought was in 9mm, was looking at getting a .40 when the suddenly were gone from the market! Glad to see springfield selling these pistols now! oh by the way I know longer have mine somebody wanted it more than I did. And I have never bothered to buy another one!!!!
