Anyone able to determine the date of manufacture of an old Smith by the serial number?

C 3597 9 It is an old pre 10.

Thanks , 'Ski

Howdy

That Serial Number does not make a lot of sense. There should be no space between the digits of the SN, although there is usually a space between a letter prefix and the digits. Is it C 35979?

If it is C 35979 than it was made between 1954 and 1956. If it is just C 3597 then it was made between 1948 and 1951.

The last 9 is spaced apart , lightly stamped. Perhaps it is not original. Would the serial number make more sense without the last 9 , taking into consideration that I think that this revolver is pre 10 old ?

I should know this , but when did the (pre 10) M&P become the model 10?

Well , that is consistent with the report from Mr. Driftwood Johnson ;
drop the questionable last 9 and we are in the 1948 to 1951 range.

1951 happens to be my birth year.

Thank you all.

One book that I truly benefit from owning is the Smith and Wesson Standard Catalog by Supica and Nahas. It will give you much more information than when your gun was made...but it will do that, too. If you like old guns, you owe it to yourself to buy it or ask Santa for it.

Couldn't agree more!

S&W used to tell me over the phone when a given gun was made just by giving the serial #. Been a while, but I think they still provide that free service.
