i just came back from the range. we were on the 100 yd range shooting my mosin, an ak, my new M&P 40, an xd 40, and a savage 243.

i never shot a .243 before, what a fun rifle. amazing accuracy, and a little more kick than i had anticipated. we were shooting core lokt 100 gr bullets.

i shot the xd before, no big deal there. as well as the ak, fun as ever just nothing really worth talking about.

at the back of the range there is a stack of tires filled with gravel, with a 4x4 post holding them up. in front of that post there is a piece of angled steel to keep the bullets from tearing up the wood post. it makes a nice loud ting when you hit it, its about 5" across and maybe two feet tall above the tires.

hitting it with the .243 was childs play, very easy with the scope, we only missed maybe twice out of 20 shots.

hitting it with the mosin was pretty easy too. i hit it 4 out of 5, and my buddy who never shot the mosin before hit it on his first shot. he kept remarking over and over how nice the mosin was, how he could not believe how accurate it was, and of course, how he needed one. i shot the .243 off a rest, all mosin shots were off hand, open sights.

just for fun i tried to shoot that piece of steel with my M&P, while my buddy looked through the scope on the savage to see where i was hitting. i just put 5 rounds in the magazine. he couldnt see my first shot, but we both heard my second one. thats right, .40 s&w at 100 yds i hit that small piece of steel 2 out of 5 shots. im not that great of a pistol shooter by any means. you should have seen the looks on our faces after hearing that *TING* :what:

any body else ever even bother shooting a pistol that far? or am i getting worked up over not really that big of a deal. i never thought i would hit even close to it. poa was at the center of the pole, halfway up, and right in the center, there was sooo many marks/holes in the steel we couldnt tell where poi was.

just thought id share my day at the range. other than being 19 degrees with a wind chill of 6 degrees. it was a great time.

Nice range report. The Mosins are great, aren't they?
As for pistol shooting at 100 yards. It can be done. Some rounds lend themselves more to long range work than others. One of my favorite long range pistols would have to be the CZ52...man that thing can reach out.
.257SIG and 357Magnum can also reach out. The magnum is especially good for longer range shots...if you have enough barrel for it to do it's work in.

That's good shooting with a 40 though - at least in my experience. Glad you had fun!

I love my Savages... don't have one in .243 (yet!). Normally, Savage factory rifles are very accurate.

A 5" target at 100 yards? That's some good shoot'n with an M&P .40 :)

I've done a little 100 yard hand-gunning, very little, but it's not as impossible as I would have thought. My 6" Model 29 will reach out to 100 yards fairly easily. Wouldn't be what I'd call a good group, but I can keep it on an 8.5x11" paper from a rest.

Never tried it with a bottom-feeder though.

I rutinely shoot my TC Contender in various calibers and my 8" barrelled Dan Wesson 15-2 HV .357 at 100 yards... (I know, no real feat)

but a buddy of mine KILLED a deer at 125 PACED yards with my then BRAND NEW Beretta Mini-Cougar 8040F... the first round it EVER fired aside from factory testing...

It was deer season, and the hunting camp next to his place (good friends of ours) had a big pile of sugar-beets sitting in the yard, waiting to be distributed to the blinds...

I pulled in and we were walking out back to his range to try the new gun...

He saw a deer on the feed pile, and whispered "gimme the gun"... He is a GREAT pistol shot, so I figured what the heck... and I pitched it to him underhand, and threw him a mag...

He seated the mag, racked the thing, sighted on the deer, added a bit of windage... fired, and dropped that deer where it stood... we paced it... 125 yards...

that gun STILL has never had it's sights adjusted... (they GOTTA be on, to do that) and that gun makes ME look like a darned good shot... but my buddy is STILL trying to buy that gun from me... he thinks he deserves it... (and maybe he does!)

100 yard pistol shots are NOT unheard of, but it is DARN good shooting... I'm glad you had fun!
