You might be right. I will have to go back and look when the leave are on it to be sure. There are lots of hickory nuts on the ground but there are lots of tree around this one. We have lots of both tulip and hickory (both smooth and shag-bark hickory). I didn't think the tulips got this big.

The tulip trees in my neck of the woods are generally the tallest trees in the woods and anywhere from 1 foot to 4 feet in diameter. The pattern of the bark, and the long straight trunk is what makes me think it is a tulip tree. If you see any clusters of seeds up on the branches, that is a dead give away that it is a Tulip tree.

Most of our Tulips are tall and straight too but have branches coming off the trunk much closer to the ground. The property was logged out 15-20 years ago and most of the tulips are on the ridge tops where everything was clear cut since they grow fast and are out pacing the slower hardwoods that are coming up with them. The bottoms on the other hand were not log due to grade and erosion control regulations and this is were all our big hardwoods seem to be. It will give me a good reason to go back there this spring once the leaves are out and figure out exactly what it is.

While not a hunter, I've dispatched many racoons.

Never shot one in daylight though...always at dusk or darker. They raid the duck pen regularly.

If you just want to shoot 'coons get some chickens or ducks and you'll have plenty of opportunities.

Have called them some. As others have said, get on the opposite side of the tree from the hole. Camo out because they notice sometimes. Sometimes they just peek and go back in but once had 4 come out of the same tree boiling mad and racing for the caller. That was fun. Try and let the coon get far enough around the tree so if you miss the tree is your back stop. 22 mag is the best medicine.
