But remember to support your local mom and pop gun store because they're there when you need them. Wal-Mart and the chain stores won't give you the kind of service or advice you get from mom and pop. ;)
 
Might be because you were buying a gun from a different dealer. I know my dealer is great never had an issue. We buy from them all the time because of their friendliness and knowledge. Occasionaly we have fun with .45 acp vs .40 s&w debate but its very respectful.

On a side note not to stereotype New Mexico but when my mom was there she felt the people were generaly obnoxius to outsiders. Her car was a rental car from Texas which may have made things worse...but bottom line is it could just be a little bit of xenophobia. I know in KS theres a bit of that as well remember you are no longer in the Northeast.
 
There is a gun shop 4 miles from my office, which makes it about 8 or 9 miles from my home. After being talked down to and pushed aside, I've never gone back. I had previously spent about $50 bucks there on one visit to get my safety card and a new mag plate.

I now drive about 24 miles away from my office (30 from my home) to go to a place with a nice owner and 5 out of the 6 staffers have always been nice, and the other guy just takes a minute to warm up to you. I've spent $675 there and am going to spend another $50 there (ammo) today or tomorrow.
 
Generally, it seems that they are happy if you announce you aren't coming back. It gives them more time to stand around. I quit a local shop after many years custom. Been gone for about a year and have probably transfered one or two thousand dollars of my business to the internet and another local merchant. I suspect it's worth it to them just to have one less customer under foot.

Well technically I bought the handgun from a gentlemen from MT who was amazingly friendly and professional. I did of course have to pay those SoBs the transfer fee. The flip side of this story that I didn't bother bringing up before is even more frustrating. My handgun arrived at the store on jan 24th 1p.m., I went in satuday (that weekend) to pick it up. (this was my first encounter with this lady) I told her I recieved notification of the guns arrivial, she got offended by me telling her what she had recieved. After a weak attempt of searching the store for my gun, (checking almost no where) she proceeds to inform me that the post office was "lying" to me (HER WORDS!!)..... So i waited the remainder of the weekend and contacted the PO on monday. They told me what I already knew, It had been delivered to my area....
At this point I emailed the gentlemen I purchased the gun from, he got on her @$$ about it and no less than 1 hour later I got a call from her saying my gun was in....
Turns out she hadn't checked in ANY items since Thursday (mine gun and a few other orders)
So my handgun was sitting outside for 5 days while she did god knows what in the shop all day.....sigh
 
Many of the gun shop owners in N.E. Ohio appear to be mentally and socially deficient cretins, the obvious by-product of excessive inbreeding!

I don't shop at Green Top any more because, despite the fact that most of the guys there seem pretty decent, I only rarely got treated well. What did it was when I had bought a rifle and a pistol, thought better of it, and asked them if they did refunds or exchanges. The guy on the phone told me that I could come on in and exchange it, so I trekked out to Richmond, only to be told that they didn't take back any firearms (mine were unfired) and would only exchange them for 2/3 of their price, despite what I was told earlier. I know for a fact that they do take them back, because I've seen them do it before.

I now shop at Bob's, at gun shows, and at Blue Ridge Arsenal.
 
I'm going to go out on a limb here, SsevenN, and make a guess that this woman isn't particularly happy about working in her husband's shop. as a result, she takes it out on the customers and does a lackluster job in other things like checking in newly arrived merchandise. Her behavior is classic "I hate this job" retail clerking.
Things might have changed for them, but in the late 90's there was a gunstore in Bridgeville PA owned by a divorced couple; apparently they couldn't work out a way to divvy it up when they divorced. They both worked there. If you went there when Mr. was working, you could expect to pay fairly high prices but be treated with minimally acceptable courtesy. If you went there when Mrs. was working, the prices were still high but you could expect to be treated like dogdoo that a wino had tracked in all over her carpet. Other stores in the area had better prices, better service, and less drama so I took my business there.
 
i have a friend who owned a steyr it went full auto on him after a few hundred rounds he sent it back to be repaired but it came back in the same condition, he eventually sold it but he did like the sights on it.
 
What 308win said in #5. I've spent a lot of time in Vance's, and I've noticed that their clerks will give their opinions, but they almost always say, "Well, in my experience..." or something of that nature. They aren't just throwing out web chatter, its from their own personal experience with the piece in question.
 
One time while drooling over a saiga I ask the dealer if he would be willing to make a traid for a Russian sks. The guy looked at me and started laughing for about five seconds and abruptly said no. when I was in the CZ market I could have bought a NIB CZ75 compact for 379 dollars but instead bought a standard one at Academy for 406. Saving 27 dollars isn't worth puting food on that guys plate. He has some pretty fair and sometimes really awsome prices on his guns but I do not like being laughed at.:fire: If he would a politely said no thanks he would have would have had at least 700 of my hard earned dollars in his bank account by now.

Its sometimes hard to tell when you're being sarcastic, so note that I'm responding as if you were not.

Although our local Wal-Mart sells no non-black powder firearms, our local Bi-Mart (a regional chain store similar to K-Mart) does, and the people who work the firearms counter have all been very polite to me and fairly knowledgeable, at least about the guns they sell. This may not be the norm, but you shouldn't always write-off chains stores.
 
Walked in a gun shop a few years ago with 4K in cash in my pocket. Just got off work and got paid., was with a buddy- we were both a bit grimy-what can I say? We don't have desk jobs. I ask, "didn't you guys used to have a bunch of military surplus rifles here?" He says, looking at his partner," oh, yeah, they are outside, around the back, next to the dumpster." "Outside, get it, buddy"?

it can go both ways - my problem with bad gun dealers is that I like guns and sooner or later im gonna plod back into their store just to see what they have - Twice now iv gone back into a store that I swore i would never enter again - on both occassions i was treated well the second time and have been going back again since - So i dunno - i guess sometimes it can be chalked up to an employee having a bad day - iv been lucky - most of the rudeness iv seen at the counter come from large chains like Scheels or Gander Mt. - its easier for me to forgive and come back to a store like that -if you dont like who you saw earlier come back when they are off shift - also - Iv seen some customers treat the FFL people really really bad - In fact i would have to say i have seen twice as many rude customers as i have rude gun dealers - Iv seen customers spout off and yell just because they dont like a price or because they ask for advise and then dont like what they hear - And im sorry but i have seen alot of really stupid(sorry - no other good word for it) customers walk into a gun store and say and do alot of dumb things - for some reason alot of gun people(myself included) seem to think they know more then they probably do and sometimes should just keep their mouths shut and listen from time to time - I guess after while i would probably be tempted to be rude to a customer from time to time if i was behind the counter - But thats just my 2cents
 
I too have the feeling that shop owner treat me negatively more often than not, real or perceived.

However, after reading this thread, it has occurred to me why this is. Shop owners like guns, they feel saddened when they have to part with thier beloved guns. So whereas we feel great joy in our purchase, they feel a great loss and therefore act accordingly, which is sometimes rudeness to the very person who is causing them such great pain.

we must practice great discpline and give these poor souls some patients....

naaaa, I just go somewhere else.
 
I've had an occasion where my friend asked a young knowitall-clerk in a local gun shop what they carried in 10mm. His immediate response was 'oh they're going by the wayside, nobody uses that caliber.' Luckily this guy was just a clerk, and I know the owner who's a great and helpful guy so I still do business there. I figure there's no point in punishing an entire business when one employee there is unhelpful.
 
I've checked out two small, local gun shops two times each, and won't set foot in either one ever again. Made the mistake of buying something from one of them. Paid way, way too much, gritting my teeth and telling myself I was overpaying to support a small, local business. The small, local business can, well, you know...

Yeah, I'm so done. There's one small, local shop left that I'll give business to, and it's close to two hours away. I go there when I can. FSOT is a beautiful thing.

I'll drive an hour and half to Detroit to use a commercial range when I want to avail myself of gun rental services. The local place is not seeing my face again.
 
Sorry you have problems reading what I wrote, Regolith. The context of this thread should have made it clear. I certainly do appreciate your corrections but it's just not necessary to donate your free time to do it and it can get in the way. It's so much more efficient to talk about the topic without the jabs. "Sarcasm," by the way, is often confused with other rhetorical devices.

my dad had a bad experiace there once. he asked to see a desert eagle (this was years and years ago) and the guy behind the couter goes "let me see the coler of your money first" real nasty like. dad pulled out several hundred in cash and showed it to him. "well, this is the color of my money, but i'm not spending it here" and walked out. he's never been back since.
have you ever been to degoughs (sp?) in mechanicsville? their real nice.

Some of the guys at Green Top (mostly the younger clerks) are pretty decent, but the others...well, aren't the best. I'd been a repeat customer, too, as I've only been building up my arsenal for a little while now, and I'm sure I would have continued to shop there had I been treated with minimal respect.

All the clerks at Bob's are friendly, and Bob himself seems like a good guy. A&P Lynnhaven has good prices...but the clerks rarely seem to know much about the guns they're selling! If you hit the gun shows, I've got a soft spot for Dark Sun, too: they've got good prices and will take care of you, but it's easy for them to get overwhelmed and not have much time to walk you through your purchase. Most of the places I've seen that are firing ranges first and gun shops second have okay prices and friendly staff but not much of a selection (certainly no surplus).
 
my new fav is dominion sporting in fishersville. paradise, as far as i'm concerned. also, check out B&R Real Country Store, near sherando lake. it looks like its just this little whole in the wall, but the selection is great and the staff is really nice. not what you would expect from a little counry store in the booneys. great prices too.
i havn't been to any gunshows since i was about 16. the last one at expoland in fishersville was a major disapointment. i was thinking about going up to richmond in febuary. the question is will i have any money to spend. *grin*

I have dealt with a few gun shops in East Tennessee (past 6yrs) and 99% of the time they are rude and obnoxious as if they are doing me a favor by me showing up. :banghead:And for the record I see my opinion as semi non-bias because my friends and family feel the same way. It’s like an FLL monopoly and as for ordering guns they charge a high mark up for stuff on (gun broker and internet related auctions). If I see something I going to buy I’ve done my research and I have little chat with sales person. I view myself as mellow guy but man there only so much cr@p you can swallow before you become jaded. I found a dealer outside of town and he is a pleasure to deal with. PM me if you you’d like to know more, btw is great post
 
My local gun dealer and even the Cabelas in my state have all been great. Not sure why any retailer would care about your demeanor just the sale. I guess in my state gunstore owners are businessmen. Our gun store owner gives everyone the same time even if its guy from a poorer community he waits the same as the well dressed doctor. The other place that buys and sells firearms is especailly fair in pricing and service. Not sure why people have issues in their states.
