Hi all,

I recently came into some spare cash and have decided to add a .45ACP semi-auto to my current line-up. I've been to all the local shops and handled\fired many different models. The top-runners are as follows. HK USP .45 (Fullsize or compact) For $868+tax. S/W 4566 for $649+tax, Sig P220 $778+tax, or the Glock 21 or 30 for $509+tax. Any input on the above models would be greatly appreciated, as would any other models that may be worth looking into (prefer NON-1911). Thanks all.

For reference my current line-up is 2 Glock 17's, Glock 23, Glock 26, Smith 640.

I picked up all three in your list, two HK USP45, P220ST, and G21.
What are you looking for?

Is the 4566 all steel or alum/steel?

The 4566 is a nice pistol, but it was designed as a duty gun. Would be fine for HD, OK on the range, too large for CCW IMO. And $649 is a bit high. The HK and Sig are both excellent guns for most purposes, sans CCW. The G21 is, well, a Glock. The G30 is the only listed option that would be feasible as a CCW. I'd prolly go with the Sig or HK

Thanks for the replies. As far as CCW goes, my daily carry is a Glock 17 and I can hide it pretty well. I do agree that the HK USP fullsize and the G21 are on the thicker side, so they may pose a problem in warmer weather. The 4566 I looked at was an all steel model without the light rail, it had night sights but I believe it was an older version of the weapon. I'm not sure what I really plan to do with this piece, carry some, shoot alot, the norm I guess. I used to stick with nothing but 9mm, but the .45 bug has been biting alot lately. The problem is I tend to be a bit indecisive at times, yet I don't have the extra cash to try all the pistol's I'd like to! :)

The problem is I tend to be a bit indecisive at times

Yea me too, that's why I bought all of them :D Just buy one at a time. The question you should be asking yourself, okay, which one first.

Actually do what I did last time, cut up small pieces of paper, put the gun name down and mix it up in a box, close your eyes then draw.

That actually doesn't sound like too bad of an idea! :)

Funny thing was that I must have bought about 600rnds of assorted .45acp ammo while I was gun browsing. Some of the shops had 50rnd boxes of American Eagle 230grn FMJ for $8.99. I also bought 100rnds of Federal HydraShok .45acp at the last stop. I figured I may not be sure of what pistol I'm buying yet, but why not take advantage of Ammo on sale.

normally, i'd say go with the glock but since you already have a stable full, get the h&k. they're both good guns and i enjoy a little variety. heck, that's half the reason we have guns, right? women wouldn't let us get away with having that many and that wide a variety of them, right?

Another recommendation for the P220

I would also like to recommend the SIG P220. I have owned several and they have always been ultra-reliable. Additionally, I would consider it be on the short list for the new DOD contract based on its performance and inclusion in the DHS contract. Further, SIG is now producing a factory 10rd magazine for the P220 in the event that increased 'firepower' is necessary. Finally, the 220 has great lines and is really sharp looking.

I would also suggest getting a pair of Nills grips from Mactec or Roco grips from i-Shot. Now if they would only bring the P220 back in 9mm or .38 Super.

Get the HK USPf! Do not look back! You have Glzaks that serve purpose. The HK will put smile from ear lobe to ear lobe on your kisser!

I say go with the Glock 30 since you'd keep the same manual of arms as what you're already use to. It's as accurate (or more so) as the G21 and is easier to conceal. Some find that it fits the hand better than the G21 due to the different location of the hump.

Kinda had the hots for the Glock 30 since it came out, myself. It's small, concealable, what I'd carry it for.

I also like the Ruger P97, but I think the Glock 30 is a bit slimmer for concealment. I'd have to hold 'em up and make a comparison, though. the P97's more affordable. I can't afford sigs and HKs and such.

Other than the Glocks, the prices seem high. I paid $739 plus tax for a USP 45 with night sights. Sig 220ST's are about $675 plus tax; a regular 220 is even less.

Try Ordnance Outsellers for a better price.

Thanks for all the replies!
I did some more browsing today and some of you folks mention that the prices on the P220 and such were a little high. I looked online as well and found this to be very true, the shops local to me are rather high on everything. I went to a another shop about an hour's drive and found they had the P220 w/ night sights and it came to $650 out the door with 3 8rnd magazines. I couldn't pass up the deal since it made the drive completely worthwhile! While I was there they also had a Glock 30 with night sights and 2 mags. It was "previously owned" however looked to be darn near new (almost no wear on the barrel, etc.) It was $425, and I had just enough left to put half down and they have a nice 4-month layaway program. BIG downside is my local range is under quite a bit of snow and ice so I have to wait awhile before I get to try out this P220. Thanks for all the input guys!

Not quite in the same price league -- but check out Taurus.

Moving up the price spectrum, what about Para Warthog?

Why not 1911?

What about single action 1911s? Nice triggers can be found, or made (grin) for not too much trouble...

I have tried Springfield and Kimber... now have 5 Kimbers (along with Glock 30) and compete with several Kimbers.

.40cal Kimber is a nice one... 10 round mags are easier to find for .45cal however.

I have the Ultra, Pro-CDP, and 3 standard (full) sized Kimbers (One .40 cal, four .45cal)

The Glock 30 is *sweet* but a little wide, like it's brother the 21. Hard to sit on these for toooo long.

Then there are pistols based on .45GAP... Just to muddy the water further... (grin)

As mentioned, you just can't decide without LIVING with a couple of these beasts for a bit of time... so try em all!

Good Luck!

A SIG 220 is hard to beat - certainly my favorite from your list.

But more important, which one fits your hand the best? Which one feels most comfortable pointing? Which one has the trigger you like best? Sights?

They're all quality guns, so you can't go too far wrong with any of them.
