so i will be needing to get a scope for my new rifle (remington varminter in .308), and i'm pretty much down to two choices (unless you can sell me on another option).

leupold vx-III, 6.5-20x with the varminter reticle,
or the vx-III with 3.5-10x that has the range finding feature.
okay, there is the third option, the 3.5-10x with illuminated reticle, german #4.

now this would be a great hunting rifle, but i only bought it cause its super cool, and i know it could be a lot of fun cutting one hole groups at the range. and i suppose in the back of my mind i'm also thinking i could use this new scope on my rem cdl in 8mm mauser, the rifle i do plan to hunt with, and currently has the vx-II 3-9x with german #4 reticle.

anyone have any experience with any of those three options? anything bad to say about them? i'd have to hear a really good sales pitch to drift away from leupold. helps that my employee discount (oops there i go flaunting it again!) makes the leupold that much more affordable.

I've owned 2 leupolds, and have not been dissappointed. If you are hunting with this scope, I'd recommend the lower power. At hunting ranges, guessing 300 yds or less the 3.5-10 is plenty of glass. 10x is a bit low for spotting your own holes at 200+ yds tho. I would use the lower power hunting because at higher powers, getting on target is difficult, due to decreased field of view.

Rifles come and go, but my Leupold 3.5-10 VXIII will never leave.:D

20X magnification is for seeing little things like prairie dogs at 300-400 yards.

I hope you have fun with that rifle, a good bolt gun with a really nice scope on top is a joy to shoot.:)
