Dedicated PD Shotguns

I have three 12 gauge "PD" shotguns: a Winchester Model 1300 having a deer slug barrel which is kept in the locked "Ram Box" of my pickup truck and two Benellis in the home; an M4 and a Nova "tactical". 00 buck in the truck gun and No 4 buck in the house guns.

My current "PD" shotgun line-up (all 12g).

(Top down, left to right)
Mossberg 590 Shockwave (soon to be SBS'd), Mossberg 3000 (wood), Mossberg 3000 (Choate p.g. stock), Remington 870P, Remington 1100, Mossberg 500A, Beretta 1301T (usually has a Holoson 507C mounted...borrowed it to mount on a handgun), Mossberg 590, Maverick 88.

I thought I had a shotgun fetish...

Beautiful lineup.

My home defense is primarily going to be by SBR leaning up by the bed. Well, that's the plan anyway. That said, my carry gun also sits on the night stand every night, and yes, I have a couple of shotguns, either of which would suffice.
They both are sitting in my gun cabinet (converted china cabinet) ready to be grabbed on the fly. One is a Century Arms SPM-12 coach gun, the other being a Mossberg 930 Tactical.

I'm going to be the outlier here, in that I don't have dedicated personal defense shotguns. I also don't have your average 28" trap/waterfowl oriented bird shotguns. I have a couple of Ithaca 37s with a handy 21" IC choked barrel. The actions are butter smooth from decades of honest use. One has a light that QD clips to the sling stud on the magazine cap as needed. Many a chicken killing varmint has seen the wrong end of that. I know them well, and would trust them above anything else in a close gunfight, a butt stroke contest, a pleasant day of grouse hunting in the October woods, or crawling through the willows to jump a flock of wood ducks. They're like a 3rd arm.

I’ve got a few:

Here’s my primary—a Mossberg that started off as a 590 Cruiser that I added a Magpul SGA stock and a fibre optic front sight to:

And a couple of backups:

A Mossberg Shockwave “JIC”:

and a Boito 680 Coach Gun with 13” barrels:

No. They can have as short a barrel as they want, but it must have a full butt stock. 8" barreled 870 & 870 clones are popular there as are "bear claws", a SxS with @ 12" barrels.

The semi-auto magazine-fed bullpups are made for home defense / personal defense. Most of the video reviews I see of them are favorable. Don't people like them? Are the reviews BS ?

I am waiting for Kel-Tec to release the 410 version of the KSG later this year. It is the same length as a Mossberg Shockwave but will be more accurate since it can be shouldered. Yes I like my 410's and 3" 000 buckshot loads do just fine out of a 410.

I am also very interested in the KSG 410, reducing the size of my HD shotgun by about 10 inches and more than doubling the capacity sounds fantastic. The only question is will it run well.

I also need to test out how the remington ultimate home defense. 410 buckshot compares to the Federal Premium. 410 buckshot out of a long smooth bore platform. I am seeing some indications that the Federal provides better grouping out of pistols and the remington (which does terrible in pistols) groups very well from long barrel smooth bores. However I haven't seen enough data to confirm this.

The Federal 410 buckshot loads are what all other 410 buckshot loads are measured against. I have tested pretty much all of the 2 1/2" and 3" personal defense 40 loads I could get my hands on in my Mossberg 500 and Mossberg Shockwave. With the 500, I shot all with the 24" full choke barrel and the 18.5" cylinder bore barrel. The only I did not shoot in the full choke barrel is the Hornady Critical Defense Triple Defense load with its 41 caliber slug - they are NOT safe to shoot out of a full choke. In all cases the buckshot loads did the best as far as grouping and penetration in my tests. I will say that the Winchester PDX-1 shells are definitely loaded hot. They were the only ones to produce a lot of recoil out of my 410's

I would personally just stick with buckshot shells for HD/SD use in any 410. In my testing the 00 buckshot shells did best out of full choke barrels while 000 buckshot did best out of cylinder bore barrels. Patterns hold tight out to 15 yards and then open up to about 12-14 inches at 25 yards. I prefer to use 3" shells loaded with 5 pellets of 000 buckshot.

Sorry for sounding like a broken record but the following warning is very important for safety reasons.

NEVER SHOOT HORNADY CRITICAL DEFENSE TRIPLE DEFENSE 410 SHELLS THROUGH A FULL CHOKE!!!!!! The reason is that the 41 caliber copper bullet will not squeeze down to safely pass through a full choke which is only 0.398".

I know a couple of shotgunners who have the Tavor TS-12. They love them, that shotgun is on my short list. Except the Tavor is tube fed, not magazine fed. My experience with the Saigas is generally magazine fed semi auto shotguns are not reliable, they often encounter
feeding issues, especially with different brand/length shells mixed or if shells have been kept in a magazine for a while and they deform. OTOH, have not heard too many issues with the magazine fed pumps. I have the Smith & Wesson M&P 12 bullpump and it's been
great, 15 rounds of 2.75" shells or 21 rounds of mini shells on board. OAL is 27.8" with a full length 19" barrel. But once again, tube fed, not magazine fed.

Box magazine fed shotguns can definitely be finicky as not all shot shells are the same length when crimped. That is part of the reason I have stayed away from them. Another issue is that you can't leave box mags left loaded for any length of time without the shells starting to deform, which can also cause feeding issues.

I keep an old Mossberg 500B with a 8 round tube, side saddle, heat shield and light as my bedroom closet gun. Someone isn't going to be happy if they break in. For fun though I enjoy hitting the range with this.
