deer gun's tradition or modern

Brain wake, I agree with what you said about handling. A slim wood stocked bolt action feels good in the hands and maneuvers nicely and swings nicely. That is what I dislike about my AR. The 30-30 is also nice but the lever limits how it can be handled a little but you can shoot it off either shoulder and it is short and light great in the bush. I am glad for the variety.

Bolt action '06, for most sizable game
.223 single shot TC for vaqrmints
Rimfires for small game
12ga SxS shottie for birds

Me and my traditional guns are ready for deer season now doesn't matter if it's hunting in brush open fields or in a tree

I've got no problem with someone preferring "traditional" guns. There is a beauty to a well made rifle with deep blued steel and finely figured hardwood stock.

But the accuracy edge is a very thin margin. The AR type, by virtue of the bearing surface on the bolt, has an incredibly consistent lockup. Thus the reason it's taken over at camp perry.

I started A thread 3 years back and get it started back up around deer season it is at 7 pages now , most are traditional the thread is
" Deer Camp Guns. What are you seeing"

I hunt with both but most are traditional ,

Traditional.

Though I have used a lever, a pump action centerfire and a bolt gun as well as a muzzle loader to hunt.

I've killed deer with everything from a lever-action Marlin 336 that belonged to my grandpa, to my AR-15,y to Dad's Remmy 700 to my SKS, to my Model 70 Winchester.....I can't say I enjoyed any hunt more or less because of my weapon of choice, and every option has collected venison for me with no issues. Some hunts I don't know what I'm taking until I leave the house....just open up the safe and see what calls to me that day!

How about accuracy 370 yards across a New Mexico canyon on a big mulie that takes some killin'? The .308 from an AR10 could do it. Personally, I was shooting a 7mm Rem Mag.

What I don't like about pistol gripped, removable mag rifles is ergos afield. I much prefer traditional when I'm spot and stalking. Not so big an issue hunting from a box blind or stand in the woods over a feeder.

i think its great in this day and age not EVERYBODY has turned to the "black rifles" while there in no way shape or form something wrong with an ar type rifle.infact some of the finest rifles i have handled are ar's.i just love it when i see a bolt or a pump ect it just feels right..:)

My AR is only .223, which is not legal for deer. I was looking into a .450 Bushmaster, and I would love to use that. My property is pretty densely wooded, so I carry a lever gun, but a semiauto would be better.

Gotta remember that traditional varies by location. In areas where typical center fire guns are legal, I'd go "traditional", which would be something like a 30-06, etc.

Here, I guess traditional would be slugs or muzzle loader, but nearly all black powder is inline, so is that really traditional?

I use whatever gets the job done.
Deer- Mossberg 500 12 ga, CVA Staghorn magnum .50, and a Taurus Silhouette in 44 mag
Squirrel- Mossberg 500 12 ga and Remington 597

Someday I want to get and hunt with an 1866 trapdoor Springfield rifle in 50-70 govt.

wyo..is that is an awsome 99 you got there and is that a 7400 in there to..where do you shop i need the number of that place:D

I guess you could say I go both ways. I killed two deer last season. One with a Ruger Number 1 in 7mm08. The second I shot with an AR15 in 300blk. I find that both rifles handle well, with a possible edge going to the AR platform because I've trained with it so much. Next season I'll switch between guns as the situation requires.

Is that a factory Ruger No 1 in 7mm08? I've found a few hen's teeth over the years, but I can't find one of those.

Me: Traditional- Marlin 95 in the woods, Ruger 77 .25-06 in the canyons and plains.

Wife: Modern- AR-15 (Bushmaster). Let's not worry about 5.56/.223 being adequate or not :)

My "go to" deer rifle is 79 years old, hunting here on my place with an AR, isn't going to happen any time soon...

Rromeo,
Mine is a rebarrel by McGowan out in Montana. Ruger didn't make many 7mm08s and I got tired of looking for poultry teeth. I had a Nomber 1 in 45-70 that I couldn't hit a barn with. McGowan did a great job on it and it shoots better than I do now, with hand loads I can get sub MOA groups.
