Short action bolt gun in 243, 7-08 or 308, light recoil and enough gun for deer, feral hogs, coyotes.

That's a damned good point! Anything over .308 length means long action, longer/ heavier rifle, longer bolt throw, etc.

u opened a can of worms here, but i love it .243 100 gr is a good round but sometimes doesnt allow for error (shot placement) i love my 243. if recoil shy the 7mm 08 is great short action and very mild recoil. my 10 yr son uses this round ,larger bullet wich helps for margin of error for shot placement 140 gr fed fusion psp perfect. if u have money for 1 gun and not recoil shy , my go to would be 30-06, u cAn put a jennings muzzle brake for 180$ and will take off 45% recoil about. bullet selection is the most versitile from the new 120gr-220 gr. this gun will kill anything in n.america. as u get into the sport then u can buy all kinds of guns u desire. my browning ss abolt stalker has been the most accurate out of box, 1/4 moa at 100 yds, im sure this barrel was the first cut on a new die,u get lucky sometimes.

What type of land do you hunt? Where I hunt (northeastern Wisconsin) a typical shot at a Whitetail is 60 yards, max shot is 175 yrds. Very heavily wooded. Out west shots are double this. Anything from a .243 to .45-70 will kill a deer. Pick a cartridge you can shoot well (are you recoil shy?) .243, .257 roberts, 260 rem, 7mm-08, .30-30, .308; for long action guns: .25-06, .270, .30-06 (yes, I prefer the old school rounds- each of the above has taken thousands of deer). Most important is to learn to shoot your choice well (offhand and off shooting sticks). Use premium ammo and only take ethical shots. Good luck.

Will a 220 grain 30.06 take kill a lion, tiger or polar bear?
