Apocalypse: I had a feeling we were about to go Glock vs 1911. I'll bite since I've owned both in 10mm. My Glock 20 had an aftermarket barrel to account for the rifling issue with cast bullets and the often talked about chamber issues which can result in KB's - let it be known I'm about as worried about those with my Glocks as I am my DE falling apart, my AR jamming, my Mini shooting 12" groups at 100 yards, an 80 series FPS resulting in my death,....
I found that with the aftermarket barrel the G20 would occasionally jam after it got dirty, maybe 300 rounds in or so. Could be the barrel could be bad luck but I attributed it to tighter chambers with the aftermarket barrel. Never got the G20 to jam with the stock barrel and it also never worried me much. The only reason I bought the G20 (my first 10mm) was because like you I also read a bunch of mickey mouse bullsquash on the web about DE's falling apart and such. This pushed me to the Glock. But unlike you I decided to later shun the advice I received on the web and bought 2 1911's in 10mm, both of which have received thousands of rounds and both have earned a permanent spot in my collection. The Glock has since been sold but that was more a function of me preferring the 1911 platform to the Glock (accuracy, handling and safer imo). A G20SF might tempt me later on down the road.
Not sure if you have ever fired or owned a 10mm but these are my experiences. Could a G20 outlast a 1911 in 10mm? Who the heck knows but I see no real reason why it should. I haven't been able to shoot either of mine to pieces and if I do I will proudly hang my battered pistol on the wall as a memento. Parts on any gun can break but I do NOT believe the DE's break any more often. For me it boiled down to me being able to carry and shoot the 1911 much better than the Glock. I think both are plenty reliable and durable, just don't drop the Glock on its plastic sights
I only took the time to write this because I hate these false rumors but more than anything it chaps my ass when someone posts about a gun they just bought and they receive critical responses. This isn't a "what should I buy" or "x vs y" thread. OP bought a gun, you tell him you would have bought something else. Bad form man. Say congrats or keep quiet.
Oh yeah, Kimber and DW still make small runs of 10mm's from time to time along with Colt, STI, Fusion and I think Wilson Combat off the top of my head. Not too bad of company right there, in fact there are only a few other 1911 manufactures not on that list that I'd even bother with.
So back to Ohio58: Awesome gun and a great find, enjoy it like I do mine!
