Now I am talking about a public range. Not your private backyard range. That would be the perfect range

For me, it wouldn't take much.

1. All shooting areas covered.

2. Nice stury shooting benches that are useable for both lefties and righties. they would be designed to allow for shooting off hand and standing and still remain behind the firing line.

3. Pistols ranging from 3 yds. to 50 yds. The city range in Texas City has a very nice set up for pistol shooting, but it is only 25 yds. Concrete walkways out to target positions. Each shooting position has pvc target holders buried in the ground. 2x2s with backer and target are placed in the pvc holes at the desired distance.

4. Rifles Ranging from 25 yds out to 200 - 300 yrds. Target holder positions could be setup similar to the pistol range. A seperate rifle range serving those that wish to shoot at distance from 500 - 1000 yrds.

5. All shooting positions would have some sort of devider that would allow shoorers to be able to see and hear what is happening around the range but protect them from flying brass.

6. Rifle racks behind and on the firing line.

7. Full auto OK

8. A small club house of sorts any maybe outside covered picnic tables to allow shooters a place to congrgate and relax away from the firing line.
CLEAN restrooms. Drink and snack machines that work.

9. Gun cleaning station.

That's all for now. Looks like I am more picky that I thought.

Describe your perfect range.

Looks like a good place to shoot.

PSC south of Houston seems very much like the place that you posted. Unfortunately, PSC is at least an hour from me. It would only be about 30 minutes if it wasn't for traffic and construction.

The closest to perfect I have ever shot on is out in Billings MT! What a nice place pistol paper, pins, and plates, covered rifle to 300 with concrete benches, indoor range, highpower and sillhoutte (SP?) full size ranges. But, I hear it was like getting Green Bay Packer Season Tickets, someone has to die to get membership.

Indoor, with automatic carriers that go out to 600 yards, with really nice benches.

Oh yeah, and ONE LANE, with my name on it ;)

I'd really like to see hand-wash stations near the range, say behind the safety line. I dislike getting all the powder residue and so forth built up on my hands throughout the day, and would like to have the ability to wash my hands with soap and water at regular intervals.

Allowing private, partitioned ranges that small groups could rent (say for an IDPA match or something) with their own RSO (bring their own NRA-certified one, or the range provides one for a fee) would be nice. They could keep shooting on their own schedule while the "main" range is in between cease fires. Obvioulsy a large berm or something would separate the two or more shooting areas.

Having a "shoot house" or some sort of walking course (even if it is forward and a little bit of side-stepping) would be nice, as I get sick of shooting from the bench. See the movie "SWAT" and their training range for a most excellent example. Something where one could move, engage multiple targets from the open and from behind cover, etc. Liability would be a Mighty Pain In The Ass, I'm sure, but it sure would be fun on a private range...

Having some sort of mechanism in the backstop, berm, whatever that makes it easy to "mine" the lead and copper out of the backstop, allowing for useful recycling, scrapping, and whatnot. I hate to see good copper and lead go to waste. It'd also help out with some of the environmental restrictions relating to lead build-up.

Finally, having protected CCTV cameras downrange for each lane, relaying an image to a TV monitor visible at each firing position, preferably with pan-and-zoom, though a fixed camera would be all right too. This would allow one to see where the rounds are striking the target at better quality than even the best spotting scopes, and allow someone to easily boresight, zero, or otherwise adjust their sights easily and quickly. Additionally, it'd be pretty cool too. :D

Perfect Range

Our range in B'ham is getting there..although I really don't believe htere will ever be a perfect public range due to the restrictions they must place on shooters due to safewty and insurance, etc.

Find the link to the plans for our current expansion and I think you'll be amazed at our goals. Crossing my fingers for the 1000 Meter rifle (we already have out to @ 500 Meters).

Anyone wanting to join can also find an application on the website. Believe me, it is money WELL spent.

I'd have to say that DWS' range would be just about perfect, with the addition that lanes have enough room between benches for prone/kneeling/sitting shooting as well.

Anywhere out on the ocean with a clear horizon through 360*. As long as you have a clear horizon, your bullets and your noise will not bother anyone.

I like to shoot balloons, which stick to the water by surface tension. As your boat motors or sails along, the balloon targets get further and further away, until they have "escaped" and are out of range. The balloons which have escaped then continue to mock you, remaining visible but too far to shoot. When you do hit a balloon, you know it right away, of course, as it disappears. We make up games where we have the folks not shooting putting out balloons, singles, doubles, bunches etc, to keep the shooter guessing. Do you keep shooting that "runner" 400 yards away, or shift to the new closer targets?

Also important: your shots make a splash like in battleship movies. That is, you get to see exactly where your bullets land in real time, to correct your aim. Not only that, the visible splash lets you know the exact time of flight to targets hundreds of yards away. You really get to realize the huge difference, for example, between the speed of .22LR and .223.

If there is a typical swell running, the balloons are hidden on the back slopes half of the time, so you have to wait for your targets to appear, and then shoot in the few seconds before they disappear again. Each time they reappear, they are another 20 or 30 yards further away, until they have "escaped" out of range.

Because you are firing from a shifting boat deck, you have to learn to fire accurately from offhand. Firing from a moving boat at moving targets really improves realistic combat skills. Think about our troops in Iraq, firing from bouncing vehicles at running terrorists, who are sometimes visible and sometimes not. Firing from the boat at balloon targets which are increasing their range and "hiding" behind waves closely duplicates the skills needed for modern combat shooting. More so, than firing from a table at an unmoving paper target, I think. Besides, it's about 100 times more fun.

Range must be outdoors

1) All paper targets on inground carriers regardless of the range which return to the firing line

2) Steel pop-up's that pop-up at random times and automatically reset for both handgun and rifle

3) Rifle lanes out to 600 yards - see 1 and 2 above

4) Pistol lanes out to 50 yards - see 1 and 2 above

5) Multi-storied house with pop-up targets representing good guys/bad guys that pop up at random

6) force on force area using paint-guns with a variety of terrain

7) club house with strategically located live video cams so the guys and gals that are done for the day can watch the fun out on the various lanes and tactical ranges

8) free membership

9) free targets

10) free ammo

11) and last but not even close to least...

FREEE GUNS! :what:

YEAH! Like that's ever gonna happen... :D

Travis (Matt): We will have to try that next time I'm in San Diego! How far out do you go? Seems like if you were spotted it would scare the sheep bad and, though legal, there would still be some 'splaining to do. :D

-shooting area allows for standing, benchrested, sitting, lying on ground, etc.
-system of rails and pulleys to put the target back townrange
-range is pistol/rifle/shotgun[tho not skeet, just target shotgun, with slugs and such). the pulley/rail target holding system would allow the target to be put out at 7 yards or 2000(for barretts :D )
-all ammo ok
-full auto ok
-.50(or .60.. or .70.. ) cal ok
-paintballing range (indoor and outdoor, for different combat situations)
-cleaned loaner guns (i've heard range guns are dirty)
-pick up all the brass you want
-range doubles as store - ammo, reloading supplies, mags, holsters, guns, etc)
-2"thick steel backstop to collect bullets easily
(now, this is pretty much not going to happen but...)
-free guns
-free ammo
-free membership

Fella's;

The Stuckenhoff public range in Casper Wyoming is the best that I've experienced. There may be better ones, but they're gonna be few & far between.

300 yard rifle range, concrete solid benches. Half the positions porched, half open. The clubhouse has indoor benches & wall ports to shoot through in case of inclement weather. A 100 yard pistol range, with a concrete firing line & benches. A sporting clays tower. An open trap range, you can do it yourself, don't have to wait for anybody to run it for you. And a 600 yard cannon range. The log clubhouse has an indoor archery & air range. The range supplies carpet & sandbags to users. Running water available. If I remember correctly, I was told dues were something like $30 a year for membership & a $2.00 a day fee on weekends for non-members.

Henry Bowman: I don't just go out to shoot. With the homeland security posture on, I'm too paranoid about doing it on daysails close to land. It's a pleasure I only enjoy far offshore any more.
