I haven't detail stripped the 226 before; I've done 1911s and Glocks but the SIG always seemed daunting to me for some reason. But after many thousands of rounds it was getting pretty cruddy in the crevices and the trigger was getting gritty, so I pulled it apart. Youtube vids helped a lot (I'm a visual learner). I got the frame back together fine but the breech block pins both broke upon removal (I assume that's pretty common on older ones?)

I used the proper roll pin punches and removed the inner pin first, then the outer. I have replacements from Brownell's on the way. Any comments/input?

Any tips on installation? I have roll pin holders if that helps.

My primary question is: do I install the outer pin first, then the inner? Or do I try to do both at once? I assume the former... but could use advice. Also any tips on reinstallation of the extractor into the breech block? Mine is the older, internal type, obviously.

You start the outer first then the inner and drive them both in at once. It works a lot easier using a press.

Make sure the breach block to frame fit alignment is right. Some times they are off a few thous and cause the pins to break prematurely. Normally they should be replaced ever 5k rounds.

This is why I dislike roll pins.

You're really supposed to replace a roll pin with a new one any time it's removed. Some of them are hard to find to purchase and difficult to get in small quantities.

Forgot to mention is to make sure you orientate the pins 180 out from each other. Sig sells a service kit which has all the pins and springs used on a particular model. Normally they cover 2-3 models so there will be extra parts like pins and decocker springs depending if you have an older model.

Thanks. The armorer's manual mentions to orient the outer pin with the split up, and looking at them before removal they were indeed oriented 180 degrees as noted.

Hopefully I won't have to remove/replace them again for another 15 years. :)

any problems with extractor replacement? Or do I just press it into the breech block?

It's good that they broke. They're spring steel and are meant for one time use only. Replace them whenever you remove them (at least for police and service weapons).
