Any Detroit area shooters go out shooting together regularly? I'm a relative newbie and wondering a good way to meet other motown shooters and try as many different guns as possible (so I know what suits me best and what to buy next). I'm looking to learn as much as possible and meet some people who share my love of firearms.

What range(s) do you guys use? Where do you recommend someone take a CCW class? I know there are a lot of places that offer them, but is one any better than the others?

I shoot pins Wednesdays at:http://www.topgunshootingsports.com/ They have match specials for all of June. I also shoot matches at:http://www.monroerpc.org/during the warm weather months. If you like, we can meet up and I'll treat you to a match(I usually am good for driving to the matches as well.) Hard to say which CPL class is the "best". They are all required to teach the NRA "Home Defense" course per the state. Most classes will have an L.E.O. or a lawyer show up for part of the class, too. Shop around as there is a big difference in price from one place to the next. Nice thing here is that you don't have to take the class over again to renew.

Hello Juna. I live in Redford, and I go shooting at the Island Lake Recreation Area range. I also own a private range up near Rose City.

If you're looking for a shooting buddy, let me know.

My previous shooting buddy recently became an engineer and now works 24/7.

Thanks for the replies! Glad to know there are some THR folks in Detroit. Any of you guys ever shoot at Target Sports in Royal Oak or Double Action in Madison Heights?

Both places have bad customer service, and high prices. But if I have to choose, I shoot at Double Action. Here is a local site, http://www.migunowners.org

I shoot at BWSA, your welcome to shoot there as my guest.

I've shot at double action (where I took my CCW class) and Target Sports...neither compare to the facilities of the Firing Line in Westland...newer, much cleaner, and they seem more willing to give you a hand when needed.

Island lake is a great outdoor range when the weather is warm...but you're limited to 25, 50, 100 yrds

I live a couple miles north of Detroit. There is a place known as the pit in Lapier. Its an 85 yard, free range on state land. I personaly spend 15 bucks on gas so I can shoot there all day, instead of paying 20 for a couple of hours in a short indoor range. The AR15.com bunch is always out there, and everyone out there is always super friendly and very safe. I have many times at the pit had people just about insist I try their guns out, and in most cases most people will let you fire off a mag or two if you ask them. If your looking for a great range, go there.

If you are looking for a formal club, the Detroit Sportsmans congress is among the best in the area. They do lots of competition and have a nice 200 yard rifle range, a roving skeet range, a cowboy action range, and indoor and outdoor pistol ranges. I personaly just can't stand somebody telling me I can only load one round at a time with my rifles, so I just go to the pit.

Hi Guys:

Yea I am looking for some shooting buddies as well....I'm a memeber of the Howell Gun Club. Looking to set up tactical drills, low light shooting, shooting on the move, etc....real gunfigthing techniques. Not just "nice" and "proper" type shooting you find at most ranges.

I wish we had some good "shooting" schools in Michigan like Chapman Academy in MO, Tactical Response in TN, and BlackwaterUSA in VA, and ThunderRanch in OR. I am planning on taking a class from one of these fine schools in the fall.

www.thunderranchinc.com/

I will be sending you guys that are interested a private message.

Take care,

Shazam :)

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! Looks like there are plenty of shooting buddies in the Detroit area. Don't be shocked if you get some PMs from me once work gets back to normal (I'm working out of town for a few weeks). I could definitely use some more range time. :)

Hi Guys

Hi Guys:

I have private messaged all of the participants preceeding this post looking for a shooting buddy. I hope I have some takers !! :D

Take care,

Shazam

Hey, Shazam..I'm wondering if I know you? We just had a our big kids day out at Howell..were you there?

Btw..I know Steve Fisher has a carbine class next month in Jackson. He's pretty good. www.michigantrainer.com

I think he spends most of his life on the range at the club there in Howell. :)

Hi Barbara

Hi Barbara:

No I don't think you know me. I was not at the range recently. Thanks for the info on www.michigantrainer.com I am signing up for their June 3rd carbine class. Looks like a good class. I like the fact that I dont have to drive to TN or VA and spend money on hotel...etc....

Have you taken a class there before??

Thanks again:)

Shazam

Steve's a good guy. I haven't trained with him yet, but he knows his stuff and comes highly reccomended.

Shazam, I'll PM you back later. We might be able to get together some time.

I have a membership at CCRC in Williamston and I'll invite anybody to go out there as my guest sometime. I also teach the NRA Personal Protection in the Home class out there.

Rob

I haven't taken the class but I've sat through them and he knows his stuff. You'll learn a lot.

Hey, Rob..you going to invite me out there? I have this new Garand and I need to learn to shoot the darned thing a heck of a lot better than I do now. I'm not ready for one of the shoots yet, I don't think. But I need to spend some time behind it.

Check out the ACTS thing, too. Tony is a good guy and they seem to have a good time.

Barb,

Check your PM's.

Rob

BTW, if it's a CMP Garand, read the "Read this first" manual closely. It's one of the best firearms manuals I've seen.

I live in the Waterford area and for an indoor range I suggest the Bass Pro Shop at Great Lakes Crossing Mall. It is cheaper than either Double Action or Target. Friends of mine took their cpl class from a guy named Jerry there and were very pleased. Pontiac Lake State Game Area has a cheap outdor range also.
As said above, I have shot at target and Double Action and would pick Double Action if those were my only choices.

I took the NRA Personal Protection in the Home class. Great class very informative. Rob is a excellent instructor.

Rob how about we set up a Garand day. I have a new production SA I haven't shot much.

Jeff

Hey, how did the class go? I never made it Jackson until late this evening, so I didn't stop in like I'd planned.

Great Class Barbara....Steve Fisher is a very good instructor....
Thanks for informing me of his class

Take care,
Shazam :)

Hi Guys

Just wanted to let everyone know that I contacted via private message that I will not be able to do much informal type shooting. This is due to a change in my schedule along with some possible career changes. I recommend everyone interested in real gun "fighting" classes sign up for some of Steve Fisher's courses.

I thought I knew something about shooting. I learned I don't know anything :uhoh:
