Has anyone used DG bullets and found they needed to be seated pretty deep to plunk in their barrel?

I just got some 230gr 45acp bullets and the OAL needs to be 1.220” to plunk in my Kimber 1911 barrel. The berry’s 230 RN and some other lead bullets I have plunk at 1.285” that’s a pretty big difference. I’m wondering if I should back my charge off for the DG bullets. I’m using 5.0gr of HP-38

thanks

Nosler shows a 1.200" OAL for their 230gr RN and JHP bullets, but be aware they are jacketed.

Hodgdon shows a 1.200" OAL for both a jacketed and lead 230gr bullet.

I have plunk at 1.285” that’s a pretty big difference.

Sammi max OAL is 1.275", so even IF they plunk they probably won't fit the magazine.

You didn't say what length you are actually seating your "other" bullets, but if you are going to load these shorter I would say lower the charge and work back up. Shouldn't take many rounds if you already have a load worked up that you like.

It’s good you’re checking COL for a cartridge, but the first question when comparing bullets in this fashion is bullet OAL, which will translate to seating depth. I’ve not loaded DG bullets but have had others where they had a more pointed profile therefore leading to a longer COL but the seating depth was very close. If your seating depth for the new bullet is more than it’s advisable to back off the load a bit especially if near max. Good luck.

Hodgdon recommends 1.2 COL for 230 gr LRN. I load Acme 230 LRN Hi-Tek coated bullets for my Kimber 1911, and use 1.2 COL. I load pretty light, using 3.5 gr of Clays. In general when I have used Acme coated bullets I find that at least for my guns they tend toward deeper seating than comparable jacketed bullets.

The DG bullets are not shorter so my seating depth is roughly .050” deeper, that’s why I was concerned.
I realize some data shows 1.200” OAL, but my Lee book has that as the minimum. That just seems pretty short.

I backed off the charge to 4.8gr and I’ll try some out when I can.

thanks
