The media seem to reference NYC's dealer stings as proof that we in VA have slack gun laws. Can anyone point me in the right direction for gathering evidence or prove my understanding incorrect about the following:
Mayor Bloomberg or his office hired private investigators to pose as customers to purchase firearms in other states. It is believed that since these purchases were actually made on behalf of Bloomberg or his office, they constitute a "straw-man" purchase, a violation of Federal law.
As far as our gun laws:
We have to do a background check for all gun purchases from a dealer; there is no waiting period per se as we have electronic access to background information (via the VA State Police). I used to have a small gun shop and the background check is quick but thorough. If no answer is given by the state police, the dealer must wait for a written response and the sale is not completed. There are more details obviously, but you get the idea.
